Dave DeBusschere, a Hall of Famer in basketball and a former pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, died on May 14, 2003 at the age of 62. He collapsed on a Manhattan street and died at NYU Downtown Hospital. From 1962-63, DeBusschere pitched to a 3-4 record with a 2.90 ERA in 102.1 innings. A year later, he became the NBA's youngest coach when he took over for the Detroit Pistons at just 24. He was traded to the Knicks in 1968 and played on championship teams in 1970 and 1973. His credits also include serving as the last commissioner of the American Basketball Association and he was general manager of the New York Knicks when the team drafted Patrick Ewing in 1985. Debusschere starred in basketball and baseball at the University of Detroit. He is one of a few players to reach the professional level in both baseball and basketball.
