Extractions: Dateline: 12/18/96 In 1985, the academic psychological journal, Cognitive Psychology , published some research on whether there is such a thing as a "Hot Hand" or whether basketball players are really streaky. Since very few members of the mainstream press read Cognitive Psychology (and I don't blame them), one of the paper's co-authors, Dr. Amos Tversky, took the results of that paper to the public a few years later. What his work (originally authored with Thomas Gilovich ) demonstrated was that streaks do not exist , regardless of what Hubie Brown says. The work Tversky did cannot be ignored as psychobabble. It used real NBA data, taking an in-depth look at the Philadelphia 76ers over the course of the 1980-81 season. Tversky and his colleagues tracked every shot the Sixers took and looked at whether any players were more likely to make a shot after they made their previous one. For example, the Sixers were often lead by the so-called streaky shooter, Andrew Toney, but Toney was statistically more likely to make a shot after missing one than after making one. Although most people considered Toney streaky, the statistics that people like Hubie Brown cling to didn't support that conclusion. It is all a matter of perception, according to Tversky, who was a Professor of Psychology at

Extractions: Dateline: 04/24/97 Though the Bulls are the class of the league this year, tying what had been until their own record season last year the best record in history with a 69-13 mark, there are many saying that they can lose this year. The injuries to Kukoc and Rodman led to three losses in the last four (unimportant) games. Teams like Miami, New York, Utah, and Houston are all thinking seriously about ways to defeat the greatest team in history. If they don't watch out, however, they all could face stiff tests early in the playoffs. Below I present the basic odds of each team winning their respective playoff series and their odds to win in three, four, or five games. Among the obvious things is that New York is in for a dogfight in their opening series, with the lowest chance among the favorites of winning their series. Eastern Conference

Extractions: Not long ago, as the legend of Michael Jordan was taking off and he was starting to amass scoring titles the way kids collect trading cards, there was a joke making the rounds of NBA cities. The only person, the punch line went, capable of holding him under 20 points was Dean Smith, his coach at North Carolina. For many rivals, defending Jordan was like preparing for a hurricane: Secure the valuables, take cover and pray the damage isn't too bad. Naturally, some handled the difficult assignment better than others. While no one could lay claim to being a Jordan-stopper, a select few were torched less frequently and even frustrated His Airness at times. Of course, for every player to give Jordan trouble, there were at least two poor saps who offered little resistance and were flattened like roadkill. THE TOP FIVE JOE DUMARS No one was capable of stopping Jordan one-on-one, but Dumars had more success than most because he focused on playing fundamental defense and wasn't intimidated. Jordan always mentioned Dumars when asked to name his toughest defenders, but the competition also brought out the best in Jordan at times. He scored 61 points in an overtime win against the Detroit Pistons in 1987 and added a 59-point effort in 1988.

It's maybe the biggest win in Virginia Tech basketball history; they even have a shot now (albeit an outside one) to make the NCAA tournament if they can win three out of their next four. The last time Tech basketball was any good they won the NIT in the mid '90s, led by an undersized power forward named Ace Custis, who's probably selling used cars somewhere right now (that's what happened to ex-Hokie standout quarterback Maurice Deshazo â once upon a time he was a Heisman favorite!). Before Custis it was Bimbo Coles â "Virginia Tech's First Olympian" read the posters â who bounced around the NBA for a few years, racking up a career scoring average of 7.8ppg. Hotness. All of which brings us to Dell Curry, the greatest Tech basketball player ever and, in a weird, backward way, my namesake. Curry, who retired just a couple of years ago, was an excellent spot shooter, and consistently one of the NBA's leaders in three-point percentage. He couldn't play a lick of defense and was far from athletic, but the man could shoot. Back when he was a Hokie, I was a wee boy, and my father often took me to watch him (also on that team: a huge white dude named Bobby Beacher, who I always loved).

In recent years Karl has tried to get the coaching positions at UNC and UNLV, and was said to be interested in the Southern California opening too. Dude, take a hint. By landing with Denver, Karl is where he belongs. In the NBA, you can wear Hawaiian shirts and scruffy hair and be considered a genius. In college, you're considered Tom Penders.
