Extractions: While I haven't watched NBA basketball as avidly as I have in years past, I still have kept up on the various teams. Here I have prepared a preview of several of the 1st round playoff brackets with some analysis and predictions. Eastern Conference Chicago Bulls (1) vs Washington Bullets (8) Matchup analysis : Power Forward (Slight edge to Bullets): This matchup is the key one for the Bullets. Chris Webber puts up astounding statistics from this positions, scoring, rebounding, passing, blocked shots. Dennis Rodman brings his intense energy to the game. In the last playoff run with the Bulls, his spectacular defense on players and fanatical rebounding won several games for the Bulls single-handedly. I feel that Chris Webber is mostly a stats player, meaning he puts up great stats, but in crucial situations he does not pull through. Webber's rebounding numbers are good, but he relies more on his considerable athletic attributes to snag those rebounds. In comparison, Rodman's positioning and rebounding fundamentals are the best in the game and his rebounding can actually win games for the Bulls, which Rodman has proved by snaring crucial offensive and defensive rebounds in tight game situations. If Rodman can take Chris Webber out of his game with his defense and semi-dirty tricks, the Bullets have little chance. Small Forward (Edge to Bulls): I like Juwan Howard's game, but I have always felt that he cannot thrive in the Small Forward position. He doesn't have the range, versatility, and quickness to play the kind of game the the position requires these days. Against lesser small forwards, his weaknesses in those areas can be masked because he can post up smalled players on offense and muscle them on defense. Against Scottie Pippen, his lack of quickness will be very evident. Pippen is an astounding defensive player and is strong enough to defend a player like Howard. Also, Pippen's range in versatility within the Bull's offense will exploit Howard's weaknesses.

Columnists Cook: Pitt got some things right in coach search Tuesday, April 22, 2003 Just in case you wanted to know Although Pitt officials bungled their search for a men's basketball coach and ended up giving the job to inexperienced Jamie Dixon in a decision that defied belief, they were brilliant to add Barry Rohrssen and Orlando Antigua to Dixon's staff. Rohrssen, a sensational recruiter, is every bit as responsible as Dixon for the current Pitt players. As for the energetic, enthusiastic Antigua, the players couldn't ask for a better, more positive role model. Reports have Marquette Coach Tom Crean and Xavier's Thad Matta at the top of Illinois' wish list as a replacement for Bill Self, who left yesterday to go to Kansas. Why couldn't Pitt have talked to those guys? The Pitt job must not be as good as the Illinois job.
Extractions: Vaughn is quickly becoming the NBAs version of Tom Arnold nobody seems impressed with his ability, but he somehow always has a job. With Orlando, Vaughn was handed a starting spot, as the team was desperate to save the vastly superior Darrell Armstrong for the playoffs. Unfortunately, Vaughn performed exactly like a player who wasnt competing for a job - Armstrong logged 29 minutes a night, a mere 5 less than the previous year, and the Magic were forced to sign a third point guard midway through the season. This guy has to be running out of chances.

Extractions: 2004-2005 NBA Salaries Based on the rosters for 12/20/04 Compiled by me (Patricia Bender) from my own information and sources. With many thanks to those sources! Players with 5 or more years of experience and signed to minimum, one year contracts only count $745,046 against a team's cap (the league pays any amount over that amount) [or the prorated amount from when the player was signed or released]. I've listed the player's actual salary in the listing and for the overall average, but used the $745,046 amount for the player's team payroll. Released players signed to non-guaranteed contracts and minimum players signed during the season are pro-rated for the number of games they were with the team or the number of games left in the season from when they signed. The team's payroll is totaled from the individual salaries I have listed. The actual team payroll maybe different from what I have listed as there maybe other small salaries that I didn't include (ie, some cap-fodder players from training camp ended up counting a small amount), there might be some bonuses and trade kickers that count that I don't know about, and/or some salaries might not be accurate - but the amount is probably close the real amount. The league salary cap for 2004-05 is $43,870,000. The league has a soft cap - which means teams can go over the cap to re-sign their own free agents. Team Payrolls Team Payroll 1. New York Knicks $102,442,544 2. Dallas Mavericks $91,553,496 3. Portland Trailblazers $83,671,312 4. Philadelphia 76ers $71,951,888 5. Minnesota Timberwolves $70,060,920 6. 11 - Cleveland Cavs Well, with his new contract, the Warriors are stuck with caffey. jason TERRY (62,PG, Arizona) The Warriors need a point guard, plain and simple. http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/1999_draft/Picks/10_Golden_State.html
Extractions: The 10th pick belongs to the Golden State Warriors, another perenial Lotter team. This time they are represented Rob Shore who selects: COREY MAGGETTE, SG, 6'6" Duke For a time in the late 80s and early 90s, the Warriors were one of the most intriguing teams of the draft ever since Don Nelson grabbed Mitch Richmond in 1988, adding more backcourt scoring to a team that already had a young Chris Mullin. No matter. Richmond became one of the league's top players over the next decade, proving Nelson right. The next several year saw Nelson pick All-Star after All-Star Tim Hardaway (1989), Tyrone Hill (1990), Chris Gatling (1991), Latrell Sprewell (1992) and Chris Webber (1993) all in successive years. Add Richmond to that bunch, and you might have the best streak of good drafting in recent history. (If you don't think so, think of those six players playing together as a unit not that they ever did.) The Webber season took a lot out of Nelson. Coincidentally or not, his streak of great draft choices ended the next season with Clifford Rozier (1994).
31 - Golden State Warriors The biggest moves they ve made have been to lock up jason caffey (seven years, The Warriors might get rid of jason caffey and, less likely, http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/2000_draft/Picks/31_goldenstate.htm
Extractions: The Warriors traded away their first round pick as part of the Chris Webber trade. In the real NBA draft they have the 55th pick. Their GM is Rob Shore who selects: Dalibor Bagaric, C, 7'0", Croatia Did you hear the one about the general manager who said that Mookie Blaylock would take the Warriors back to the playoffs last year? (Pause for laugh track.) No, of course the Warriors didn't make the playoffs - the talent just wasn't there and a rash of injuries of biblical proportions did not help. Golden State lost over 300 player-games to injury last year - second in the NBA, though it's difficult to fathom another team having worse injury problems. They finished an astoundingly bad 19-63 , in sixth place in the seven-team Pacific Division (thank God for the Clips) and without a first-round pick this year . By New Year's Day, they were so many games out of playoff spot, many of the players just gave up hope. Much of this finally contributed to P.J. Carlesimo being tossed out on his ass on Dec. 27 of last year (showing that once again, as was the case in the Webber-Nelson fiasco, that the Warriors got rid of the wrong person when they traded
