With just two days remaining in last week's voting, Petersen held the slim lead over Malone. The three-time NBA MVP recovered, however, in the final hours of balloting to prevent perhaps the biggest upset in basketball history. Johnson had a much easier time with his first-round matchup, knocking out Lewis Lloyd by a percentage margin of 77-23.

Extractions: Dee Brown will take his basketball prowess to the other side of the camera as ESPN's newest NBA studio analyst, the prize in the third season of ESPN's Dream Job, the first to feature former pro athletes. The former NBA guard and Slam Dunk Contest winner beat five other former NBA players Matt Bullard, Darryl Dawkins, J. R. Reid, Dennis Scott and Gerald Wilkins during the six-week competition. Upon learning of his victory, Brown executed a cartwheel across the studio floor. As the winner, Brown earned a one-year studio analyst contract with ESPN. Hosted by Stuart Scott, last night's finale saw the last two contestants - Brown and Bullard - perform analyst-related duties, including a mock highlights segment with current Kia NBA Shootaround host John Saunders, a live interview with an athlete or coach of their choosing, and a round of rapid fire sports trivia. In the end, Bullard was cut by three consecutive votes: viewers voting at espn.com; Stephen A. Smith; Al Jaffe. The judging panel also included Kit Hoover and Woody Paige. Brown started the finale with sharp analysis of the just-concluded Philadelphia 76ers vs. Los Angeles Lakers game. That segment was followed by satellite interviews Bullard with new Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson and Brown with the Orlando Magic's Grant Hill. In the trivia round, Brown defeated Bullard 10-6.

Extractions: Mustangs wrap up division title Fremont boys face big test at Milpitas By Dick Sparrer There are only two weeks remaining in the boys basketball season in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. But it shouldn't take that long before the league championship is decided. And, barring some unforeseen circumstances, that champion will be Marc Cadet's Homestead Mustangs. That's no prediction either... it's a cold, hard fact. Homestead has a three-game lead with three games left to play in the division. And the Mustangs, who have already clinched no worse than a title tie, can clinch the championship with a win in any of the three games. Homestead snagged a piece of that title with two wins last week, beating Mountain View 50-37 and Santa Clara 49-30. The Mustangs are now 9-0 in league play, 19-4 for the year, and their nearest rival, Saratoga, sits three games back in the loss column.
