While traveling through Asia its remarkable to hear the perceptions of NBA fans of what they think the NBA is all about. At a recent pick up game in Phnom Penh, Cambodia one 22 year old Asian NBA fan felt that the reason Shaquille ONeals foul shooting was so bad is because he is so tall and when he shots he is too level to the basket. Since Im not from the Hip-hop generation of logic I disputed his rationale. I did agree that ONeals foul shooting was stinking. I mistakenly pointed out that the Houston Rockets leading three point shooter last season was Matt Bullard who I thought was seven feet tall just one inch smaller than ONeal. My mistake was that this year Bullard is listed as only 6-10.

Extractions: March 30, 2005 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former Jacksonville University standout and 1991 NBA slam dunk contest champion Dee Brown was awarded a one-year contract as ESPN's newest NBA studio analyst after winning the third season of ESPN's Dream Job competition, the first to feature former pro athletes. Brown, who played 11 seasons as a guard in the NBA, beat out ex-NBA players Matt Bullard, Darryl Dawkins, J.R. Reid, Dennis Scott and Gerald Wilkins during the six-week competition. Upon learning of his victory on Sunday night, the Jacksonville native and 1986 Bolles School graduate did a cartwheel across the studio floor. "Basketball comes natural to me, so this was tougher," said Brown. "The experience of `been there and done that' is invaluable when analyzing basketball games. People and fans want to hear insight from a person who has been in similar situations." Brown was a two-time Honorable Mention All-American at JU, where he ranks first on the single-season steals list (88) and third on the Dolphin career (201) steals list. His 41 points against Old Dominion in the 1990 Sun Belt Conference tournament still stands as a conference record. Brown, who graduated from JU in 1990, had his No. 4 Dolphin jersey retired in 1993.

The USA squad will depart August 5 for Izmir, Turkey, site of the World University Games. The competition will take place August 11-22. "We're very happy that Greg will represent the state of Iowa and our basketball program at the World University Games," said Hawkeye Coach Steve Alford . "Greg performed at a high level during the trials in a continuation of his solid play this summer. "At the same time, it's unfortunate that Jeff Horner wasn't able to join Greg on the USA squad," added Alford. "He worked extremely hard in his preparation this summer and gave a great effort during the trials. Unfortunately, he didn't shoot the ball as well as he is capable and there are some terrific guards on the USA team. It was a tribute for Greg and Jeff to both be selected for the trials and it will help them both in preparation for their senior season as our captains."

Summer play allows us the first opportunity to see some of the NBA's youngest talent show off their stuff in extended minutes that they don't normally get during the regular season. You can take the following numbers with a grain of salt, but they do show how a player's game will translate on the next level. For instance, No. 1 pick Dwight Howard struggled offensively in his debut, but his game-high 11 boards and 4 blocks have us re-thinking our opinion that he'll be a guy to shy away from the paint in his first few seasons. TalkingPoints By Joe Davidson Bee Staff Writer The coaching boiler hasn't simmered a bit in the searing heat of summer. You'd think the whirlwind 2004-05 regular season in which 10 coaches were turned over would have stabilized by now. But the NBA business never settles, with pressures and expectations churning through the masses, young and old and even older. Hubie Brown and Rudy Tomjanovich issued surprise resignations in Memphis and Los Angeles, respectively. Lenny Wilkens was kicked to the curb in New York. The Denver Nuggets flushed two coaches before settling on George Karl. Paul Silas was canned in Cleveland despite steering a playoff contender. Don Nelson bowed out to allow Avery Johnson to assume command in Dallas. And there were still teams looking to fill voids in June and July.

His contract expires Sept. 30 and will not be renewed, said Tad Brown, the team's senior vice president for sales, marketing and broadcasting.
