Human Rights Tribunal has been ordered to hear the case of a black man who said he was a victim of racial stereotyping. Jason Troy was surrounded by police, their guns drawn, while waiting for a friend in the parking lot of a Vancouver Petro-Canada station in July 2000. Police had been called by the station attendant, who claimed an attempted robbery or drug deal was taking place. Troy, who has no criminal record, complained he was a victim of racial profiling, but his case was dismissed by an officer of the Human Rights Commission, who said there was no basis to justify referring the case to the commission's tribunal.

Extractions: ASSOCIATED PRESS 4:05 p.m. June 20, 2005 The Illini guard, who averaged 13 points and 4.5 assists last season, had declared for the June 28 draft but did not hire an agent. He broke his right foot at a pre-draft camp in Chicago on June 8. Illinois, the top-ranked team for most of last season, lost to North Carolina in the NCAA title game. "It was tough deciding between the NBA and coming back," said Brown, the Big Ten player of the year. "There was a lot of positives both ways." Appearing at a press conference on crutches Monday, Brown said he ultimately sought guidance from his family before making his decision. "I asked my parents, I asked all my family: 'Would they mind another year being down in Champaign?'" Brown said. "Everyone in my family loves Champaign, so I just decided to come back." Illinois coach Bruce Weber commended Brown for his handling of the situation.

"Whatever is going on, he wants to be in the middle of it," Illinois coach Bill Self said. A 6-foot, 175-pound freshman combo guard from Maywood Proviso East, Brown arrived on campus highly decorated. The first high profile commitment since Self became Illini coach before the 2000-01 season, Brown kicked off a successful recruiting season by committing in June before his senior year. Extractions: HOME NFL MLB NBA ... FoxCollegeSports Big Ten will suffer down season in '05-'06 Story Tools: Print Email Yoni Cohen / Special to FOXSports.com Posted: 24 days ago Last season, the Big Ten was unfairly believed to be "down." This season, it actually will be. After losing a sixth consecutive ACC-Big Ten challenge by dropping seven of nine head-to-head games, the Big Ten was regularly characterized as "weak" in 2004-05. Though Illinois spent nearly the entire season ranked as America's best club, the conference's also-rans were routinely overlooked and under-appreciated. Excepting the Fighting Illini, the Big Ten last season generated national interest only thanks to the off-court antics of disgraced Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien, Michigan guard Daniel Horton, and former Iowa star Pierre Pierce. More off-season primers ... A-10 looking for momentum But the season that began with a whimper ended with a bang. Ohio State shocked Illinois in Columbus, preventing Bruce Weber's club from becoming the first Big Ten team to go undefeated in 29 years and enabling Thad Matta to make an effective pitch to four of the top 25 players in the Class of 2006, including Greg Oden. On Selection Sunday, five conference clubs were invited to go dancing. Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois subsequently won three, four and five games respectively before losing to national champion North Carolina. Owing to the departures of Wisconsin's Mike Wilkinson, Sharif Chambliss, and Zach Morley, Michigan State's Alan Anderson, Kelvin Torbert and Chris Hill, and Illinois' Deron Williams, Luther Head and Roger Powell, the Big Ten won't repeat last March's Madness this spring. Indeed, the conference will enter the 2005-2006 season without a single legitimate national title contender. Were it not for Dee Brown's untimely foot injury at the Chicago pre-draft camp, the Big Ten would also lack a realistic national player of the year candidate. Responsible for only two of the 24 American players participating in the Under 21 World Championships and World University Games, the conference will soon be under-represented in the Wooden Award's preseason top 50 as well. Nor do the incoming freshmen hold much promise. According to Scout.com, last week acquired by Fox Interactive Media, not a one of the top 30 individual recruits or top 20 recruiting classes for 2005 is Big Ten bound.
