Extractions: Oddly, this is the second consecutive column on sports; but not literally, since every profession, in and out of the spotlight of celebrity, harbors the good and the lousy. And since this space mostly concentrates with some notable exceptions on the lousy, I thought it a welcomed respite to laud the good. Sadly, this is a society addicted to the perception that young, brash celebrities make for interesting press if they are angry, criminal or just plain annoying. So it is quite refreshing when a relevant story pertains to a subject with a level of intellect, pride and a compassionate respect rarely displayed by even those of considerable maturity.

Extractions: Hot Off The E-Mail: Some Duke Fan's Correspondence With Elton Brand We all get wacky forwarded e-mails coming down the pike. This one found its way to my desk, and my top internet detective claims this is true. (By the way, I prefer Elton's poor English to Jennifer's.) Who do you side with: Jennifer or Elton? Click here to e-mail me your opinion From a Cameron CRAZY named Jennifer: I graduated from Duke last May and just wanted to express my disgust for your decision to leave the Duke program after only two years. As an alum, not only do I hold the school in high regard, but the basketball program as well, especially since both have deservedly garnered such a great deal of respect for their accomplishments. As part of our basketball program, you represent Duke as a whole. We are first and foremost an academic school, you clearly did not belong at Duke in the first place if this was the extent of your commitment to Duke and a college education in general. You have not only insulted the current students who are putting in four years at a school they love, but also the thousands of alumni who have realized the value of a Duke education and what an honor and privilege it was to be there for four years. If you do not realize the opportunity you has infront of your (sic) to play for Coach K and at the same time attain a Duke diploma, then that is certainly your loss. I just wish that you has (sic) spared us the notion that you were continuing in the tradition of being a Duke student-athlete, in emphasizing excellence in both academics and athletics. You will not be considered part of the Duke family, in my mind as well as many others. You have by no means proved yourself worthy of that title.

Boys Basketball: Brand Night At Peekskill Boys basketball brand night at Peekskill. PETER ABRAHAM THE JOURNAL NEWS I came to support elton, and I m having a great time, Miles said. http://www.thejournalnews.com/localsports/020502/05brandweb.html
Extractions: (Original publication: 02/05/02) The NBA star was back home in Peekskill last night to have his No. 42 jersey retired, and everybody in town, it seemed, wanted either an autograph or a picture. The ceremony, which lasted just over 30 minutes, didn't include any of the current players. But Armstrong felt a part of it just the same. "You watch him come in here, and so many people wanted to shake his hand or talk to him," Armstrong said. "It made me wonder what I will do with my life and whether I can do some of the same things he did." Armstrong, who is being recruited by several Division I schools, was eager to spend a few minutes with Brand. The two huddled after the game. "He's somebody I know I can get good advice from," Armstrong said. "He's been there." Unit last night, Armstrong and his teammates didn't know Brand well. The Los Angeles Clippers' forward spends little time in his hometown these days. But Brand is a presence in their lives. His charitable foundation paid for eight players to attend the Five Star Camp last August, and he arranged for the entire team to be outfitted in new red-and-white sneakers and warmups. More sneakers will be shipped before the Section 1 tournament.

Extractions: LOS ANGELES (AP) Elton Brand had a season-high 30 points and six assists, Bobby Simmons scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 94-82 on Monday night to complete the second-best November in franchise history. By winning their fourth straight game, the Clippers (9-6) have their best November record since the 1974-75 team, playing in Buffalo, went 12-4. The only other times the Clippers have had a winning record in November were in 1977 (8-6) and 1992 (7-6). The loss was just the second in 11 games for the Cavaliers (9-5), who were shooting for their first 10-win November since 1977. The Clippers won despite playing without leading scorer Corey Maggette (sprained left ankle) and Kerry Kittles (sore right knee). Rookie Shaun Livingston (broken kneecap) is also sidelined. Marko Jaric added 16 points and 11 assists and Mikki Moore scored 13 for the Clippers all but four in the fourth quarter. Chris Wilcox had 11 rebounds and Simmons 10 to lead the Clippers to a 39-34 advantage.
