Extractions: Two-time Olympic gold medalist Karl Malone Mike Bibby The newest members added to the 2003 USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team included NBA superstars Mike Bibby (below left) and Karl Malone (below right). Plans for the 2003 USA Senior National Team call for the roster to consist of a core group of eight to nine top NBA players, who if the U.S. qualifies, along with the coaching staff are expected to represent the United States in the 2004 Olympics. The U.S. team's remaining three to four roster positions will be filled by role players who could come from professional leagues here in the U.S. and abroad, from the U.S. college ranks, or other USA Basketball constituents. The role players will be selected for just the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Team, although, their participation on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, should the U.S. qualify, would still be a possibility but not guaranteed. The USA men, gold medalists in 12 of the 14 Olympics it has played in, including the last three when NBA players have participated (1992, 1996, 2000), must earn a qualifying spot for the 2004 Olympic Games. A total of 10 men's teams from North, South and Central America will participate in the Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament and only the top three finishers will earn a coveted qualification spot for the Aug. 13-29, 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Extractions: At Arizona, Mike helped lead Lute Olson's Wildcats to the NCAA championship in 1997. Bibby impressed everyone during the 1997 Final Four by making clutch shots and free throws in tight games, even though he was just a freshman. Mike appeared to be the coolest cat on the floor. After being drafted in 1998, Mike had to wait for the strike to end before he could begin his career with Vancouver. Starting at the point for the Grizzlies from day one, Mike's play got better and better as the season progressed. He averaged over 13 points and 6.5 assists per game as a rookie, and was named to the first team All Rookie squad. Called "Jason Kidd with a jump shot" by no less than Michael Jordan, Bibby should be one of the best point guards in the league for the next decade.

Extractions: SACRAMENTO, Calif. On the morning of Game 3, Mike Bibby and Cuttino Mobley made a vow: If the Sacramento Kings were doomed to be knocked out of the playoffs, they would leave playing their favorite high-energy, high-risk style of basketball. And thanks to that mutual aggression pact, the Kings finally got a win in their first-round series with the Seattle SuperSonics Bibby had 31 points and seven rebounds in a dramatic improvement on his last two performances, and the Kings earned a 116-104 victory over the Sonics on Friday night to cut Seattle's series lead to 2-1. Kenny Thomas scored 22 points and Mobley had 21 both career playoff highs for the Kings, who rode the energy from their deafening sellout crowd to a 21-point lead in the first half. With Bibby leading the way, Sacramento coolly stayed ahead throughout a foul-filled second half, making 50 percent of its shots. The Kings were disgusted with themselves after two losses in Seattle, where the Sonics controlled the tempo, jumped to big early leads and played better defense. Bibby, the Kings' floor quarterback, and self-appointed locker-room leader Mobley both worked to change things by studying film and putting in extra workouts after practice Thursday and they outlined a simple strategy for themselves in Game 3.
