Scott Padgett is talking so casually about his continued belief that Kentucky can win "this thing," it seems almost certain the reference is to the SEC East or the next game on the conference schedule. With the season-ending knee injury to star guard Derek Anderson still a fresh wound in the UK lineup, those goals certainly seem more reasonable. Anderson was the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference, a likely All-American and a team captain. Without him, Kentucky's top-five ranking has more basis in the past than the present or future.

Celtics HORNETS 81, CELTICS 73 By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 11/20/2003 In the final moments of the third quarter, Tony Battie grabbed an offensive rebound. The ball essentially bounced off the rim and into his hands as he stood a few feet left of the basket. In any other game, this would not be newsworthy. But given the way Boston struggled with rebounding last night at the FleetCenter, it was noteworthy at the very least. ADVERTISEMENT The Celtics wrangled only eight offensive boards all night compared with a whopping 24 by the Hornets. Boston was outrebounded, 50-31. After securing the rebound, Battie turned to pass to one of his teammates waiting around the perimeter. Instead, he ended up committing a turnover, practically throwing the ball out to P.J. Brown near the top of the arc. Upon watching this sequence of plays, Celtics coach Jim O'Brien turned and walked back toward his bench, shaking his head with a bemused, half-smile. The rare offensive rebound, the turnover, and the reaction summed up the 81-73 loss. "What did somebody say once?" asked O'Brien at the start of his postgame press conference. " `I'm too old to cry and it hurts too much to laugh.' But clearly, I don't have to tell you that it was the offensive glass and our turning the ball over that was our demise tonight. And clearly the glass is a major league problem for us. We didn't practice much [Tuesday], but we practiced blocking out. It didn't work. So, it's back to the drawing board."

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Celtics By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 12/16/2003 In the second major trade of his tenure as Celtics director of basketball operations, Danny Ainge sent center Tony Battie, swingman Kedrick Brown, and forward Eric Williams to Cleveland yesterday in exchange for guard Ricky Davis, forward/center Chris Mihm, and center Michael Stewart and a 2004 second-round draft pick. ADVERTISEMENT With the move, Ainge continues to leave his imprint on the Celtics, dealing away core players who helped turn around the franchise following a six-year absence from the postseason. Battie (5.9 points, 5.1 rebounds per game) and Williams (11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds) started for Boston last season before being moved into productive reserve roles this season. After being demoted from the starting five, Brown saw little playing time. The biggest loss for Boston may be the leadership of Williams, who was a favorite of coach Jim O'Brien for the way he played defense. Williams was also considered the heart and soul of the Celtics by many of his teammates, who were visibly shaken and dismayed by his departure. "One thing I don't want to discount is the players that we're giving up," said Ainge, who was roundly booed during the ceremony retiring Cedric Maxwell's number last night at the FleetCenter. "To get something of value you have to give something of value.
Raider Standouts Battie, Carr Nab Big 12 Honors Center tony battie and guard Cory Carr, Texas Tech s two most productive If you re a talented basketball player, people are going to recognize you http://www.lubbockonline.com/news/030497/raider.htm
Extractions: Avalanche-Journal Center Tony Battie and guard Cory Carr, Texas Tech's two most productive basketball players this season, were recognized for their efforts Monday when the first two All-Big 12 Conference teams were announced. Battie was a first-team pick on both the coaches' and Associated Press teams, and Carr was named to the second team on both squads. Battie, a 6-foot-11 junior from Dallas, is the only player in the Big 12 who averaged doubles figures in points and rebounds during the regular season. He finished as the league's fifth-leading scorer at 19 points per game and leading rebounder at 12 rebounds per game. He also shot 57 percent from the floor, third-best in the Big 12, and was fourth in blocked shots with an average of 2.4 per game. ''It is an honor,'' Battie said. ''But I couldn't do it without the help of my teammates and my coaches, especially Will Flemons, and Stan Bonewitz. Stan does a great job picking up what the defense is doing and how it leaves me open. ''I also have to credit Cliff Owens, Ross Carmichael and Da'Mon Roberts for pushing me hard every day in practice. Brock Barnes does a good job player-coaching from the bench. I credit all those guys for any honors I'm chosen for.''
Tech's Carr May Announce Future Basketball Plans Today Last month Carr, along with Tech teammate tony battie, announced he would makehimself I don t have to play basketball in the future to be successful. http://www.lubbockonline.com/news/061397/techs.htm
Extractions: Avalanche-Journal Decision day may have arrived for Texas Tech's Cory Carr and there's a chance he might walk back through a door he left open last month when he announced he was making himself eligible for the 1997 National Basketball Association draft. Carr, the Red Raiders' talented junior guard, is scheduled to announce today his decision to either return for his senior season or go through with plans to be included in the upcoming NBA draft. Carr is scheduled to announce his intentions at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. today in the lobby of the Athletic Complex on the south end of Jones Stadium. Last month Carr, along with Tech teammate Tony Battie, announced he would make himself eligible for the NBA draft. But even during that announcement, Carr left the door open to change his mind. He has until Wednesday to do so. And, despite broadcast reports on local television stations Thursday, nobody from the Red Raider program is sure of what Carr has decided - including Tech head coach James Dickey. Reached at home Thursday, Dickey said he has no knowledge of what Carr has decided.

With Orlando, Vaughn was handed a starting spot, as the team was desperate to save the vastly superior Darrell Armstrong for the playoffs. Unfortunately, Vaughn performed exactly like a player who wasnt competing for a job - Armstrong logged 29 minutes a night, a mere 5 less than the previous year, and the Magic were forced to sign a third point guard midway through the season. This guy has to be running out of chances.
