Extractions: NCAA Championship Game One desperation heave. One dunk. One miracle. North Carolina State's win over Houston in the 1983 title game was all that. And more. And even a little more. When Lorenzo Charles slammed home Dereck Whittenburg's errant shot at the buzzer, no one knew the exact ramifications of this game. Oh sure, everyone understood the David vs. Goliath angle. But not the rest. Not the part that the nation had just witnessed a single play that turned March mad forever. Now, the NCAAs had always been a nice tournament, but it wasn't recognized as the most exciting event in sports, which it arguably is now. This is, after all, a sport that used to have to share a stage with the Academy Awards on its national championship night.

Extractions: Latter-day Jazz Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday April 20, 1999 05:14 PM By Marty Burns Whenever he attends services at Mormon churches in Salt Lake City, Jazz reserve forward Thurl Bailey draws surprised glances. But Bailey, possibly the only 6'11" African-American of Mormon faith, doesn't mind. "As a kid I carried the sousaphone in my school marching band," he says in his smooth baritone. "Believe me, I'm used to being noticed." In his second stint with the Jazz, Bailey, 38, has caught the attention of the Delta Center faithful and not because he's the only Mormon on the roster. Nicknamed Father Time by his teammates, he is once again a contributor on what was, at week's end, the league's winningest team. He blocks shots, sets hard screens and plays steady help defense. "He does the little things that make the other guys successful," Jazz assistant coach Gordon Chiesa says. Coming off the bench is new for Bailey, who in his first stint with the Jazz, from 1983 to '91, was a high-scoring small forward with a lethal jump hook. A first-round draft pick out of North Carolina State, he played 665 games with Utah, averaging 14.6 points and 5.7 rebounds and once, against the Nuggets in '88, scoring 41 points in a game. But by the beginning of Bailey's ninth season his game was in decline, and in November '91 he was traded to the Timberwolves for forward Tyrone Corbin. After three lackluster seasons in Minnesota, Bailey decided to leave the NBA for a higher-paying job with Panionis of the Greek league. He spent a season in Greece and then three in Italy as a starter.

However, Aaron McKie, BASKETBALL DIGEST'S 2000-01 Best Sixth Man, gives the Philadelphia 76ers a little bit of everything. McKie is one of the most fundamentally sound players in the NBA. He knows how to hit the open man, spot up from three-point range, and play good defense. As a result, Sixers coach Larry Brown has used him at three different positions: point guard, shooting guard, and small forward.

She is smiling, and her gleaming teeth flash pleasure. The man, white-haired, older, his tuxedoed chest and shoulders garlanded by a lei of flowers, is turning toward her with a smile of shy but burgeoning satisfaction. Just above the pulpit, her dark, left hand grasps the pale fingers of his right hand. With the possible exception of Marjorie Hinckley, is there another woman in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or for that matter the world, who would so confidently and comfortably intrude on the personal space of 90-year-old Church president Gordon Bitner Hinckley, and so naturally induce him to enjoy it? Not likely. For this man, held by Church members to be prophet, seer, and revelator, it was a moment of unusual personal intensity and, yes, perhaps, revelation'. It occurred during his public birthday celebration before a huge throng in the new

The Kennedy Citizenship award is the oldest citizenship and community service award in the NBA and is named for the second commissioner of the league. The award honors an NBA player or coach for outstanding service and dedication to the community. "I am honored to have been selected for such a prestigious award, said Snow. To now be mentioned in the company of those past and even future recipients who spend so much of their time, energy and resources in service to others is truly a blessing.
