Extractions: May 7, 2005 Blue Ducks pick coach Hall of Famer Nate Tiny Archibald to lead team this summer Melbourne , FL The Brevard Blue Ducks took a big step today but in a tiny way - hiring Hall of Fame player Nate Tiny Archibald as the team's head coach for the 2005 season. I am thrilled to be back to coaching with the Blue Ducks, stated Archibald. I love teaching kids the game of basketball. I think this is going to be a great experience for both me and the players. Hailing from the Bronx , Archibald first made an impact in basketball at Texas El-Paso where he scored over 20 points per game his last two years. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the second round (19 th overall) in the 1970 NBA draft. A penetrator, pinpoint passer and outside shooter with great range, the 6'1 Archibald finished his rookie season averaging over 16 PPG. He went on to log 14 NBA seasons with Cincinnati (1970-72), Kansas City (1972-76), the New York Nets (1976-77), Buffalo (1977-78), Boston Celtics (1978-83) and the Milwaukee Bucks (1983-84). One of his most accomplished feats was in 1973 when he became the only NBA player in history to lead the league in both scoring (34.0 PPG) and assists (11.4 APG).

It's more than a common first letter and Lanier was on hand at the "Basketball and Books" clinic at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) to prove it. "This program is important because it provides a kind of connection to empower kids to read, and reading is one thing that is of tremendous importance to me," said Lanier, a former Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks player and a Hall of Famer. "Because we're with the NBA, we use basketball to tingle their interest and create the building blocks that lead to success in life." The clinic, part of the NBA's Read to Achieve initiative, took place March 12 in the KDES auditorium with about 75 students from the 4/5 and 6/7/8 teams. It included a read aloud of Strong to the Hoops, written by John Coy, with NBA stars such as Lanier; Hall of Famer Nate "Tiny" Archibald, who played in Kansas City, for the Boston Celtics, the Milwaukee Bucks, and other teams; WNBA players Tamika Catchings, an Indiana Fever forward, Tausha Mills, a Washington Mystics center, and Markita Aldridge, a Mystics guard; Congressman Ray LaHood, of the 18th district of Illinois; and from Gallaudet University, President I. King Jordan and his wife, Linda Jordan, and Provost Jane Fernandes.

At each end of the court is a vertical backboard, measuring usually 6 ft by 4 ft (2 m by 1 m). Each backboard is anchored to a wall, suspended from the ceiling, or otherwise mounted so that its lower edge is 9 ft (2.7 m) above the court. (Backboards originated to keep spectators from interfering with the game.) The baskets are attached firmly to the backboards 10 ft (3 m) above the playing surface. Each basket is 18 in. (46 cm) in diameter and consists of a horizontal metal hoop, or ring, also called the rim, from which a fringe of wide-meshed white netting is hung. The regulation basketball is an inflated, leather- or nylon-covered sphere that weighs from 20 to 22 oz (567 to 624 g) and has a circumference of 30 in. (76 cm). A basketball team, which is directed by a coach, is made up of two forwards, two guards, and a center. At the beginning of play, called the opening jump, the forwards of one team are stationed in the forecourt, that half of the playing area containing the basket at which their team is shooting. The two guards stand in the backcourt, near the basket their team is defending. The center, usually the tallest player on the team, stands inside a 24-in. (61-cm) circle, midway along a line painted across the center of the court.

TV MLB NBA ABA NFL WFL NHL WHL NASL MISL Stadiums Cards Others Other Sports By Patrick Mondout The picture on the right and the ones below do not do this set justice insofar as how colorful it is. They seem to have been designed by someone who grew up reading Timothy Leary's Cartoon and Coloring Book . The Super70s were colorful and I'm glad Topps was able to capture that in sets like this and the ' and ' 75 Topps baseball The standard-sized cards were sold in 10¢ wax packs of 10 cards with team sticker inserts. Cards numbered 1-176 were for NBA players and 177-264 featured the ABA. The fronts once again feature mostly posed shots with bright colored backgrounds though for the first time no part of the player extends outside the printed borders. The team nickname is printed in successively larger letters near the bottom of the card in vivid colors that differ (and sometimes clash) from the background. With two teams sharing the same nickname of 'Rockets', (the ABA's Denver franchise and the NBA's Houston), Topps had to place little boxes with the city name over the bottom right of the nickname for players from those two teams. The player's name and position is at the bottom in the white border area. The orange and blue on gray card stock backs were vertical for the first time since '69-70.

Extractions: WWW Contact FAQs Email This About ... TV MLB NBA ABA NFL WFL NHL WHL NASL MISL Stadiums Cards Others Other Sports By Patrick Mondout This is one of the most memorable sets in any sport of the Super70s - though any set featuring guys named Corky Calhoun, Butch Beard, and Ticky Burden automatically qualifies. These cards were really big - bigger than the " tall boys " of the early Super70s. A full 3⅛ x 5¼ inches and great for autographs. The price of wax packs returned to 10¢, but you only received six cards instead of the usual ten - at least they were bigger. If you have not seen them in person then I'm afraid the pictures below won't help. They may look like like ordinary basketball cards, but you need to hold these larger than life cards in your hand to appreciate how cool they were to a child (with much smaller hands) of the Super70s. And while I will always be partial to the set for sentimental reasons, this was really the last classic set of basketball cards Topps ever produced. All of this is true despite some truly uninspired photos. Take a look at Dr. J on the right and the David Thompson rookie below. They are on the bench! Why not show one of them dunking over Artis Gilmore or Maurice Lucas? At least the size of the front allows for the largest unobstructed photos in the history of Topps basketball cards - even with the large letters spelling out the team nickname down the left side of the card.
