AOL Fantasy Sports September 14, 2005 11:41 AM ET The News Bobcats first-round draft pick Sean May underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, and the North Carolina product is expected to miss the start of training camp in October. "I am committed to doing whatever I have to do to be back on the court as quickly as possible because I am so excited to start my NBA career and to help the Charlotte Bobcats grow," May told the Associated Press. "I feel I am in the best shape of my life and this will not keep me down." Our View May is expected to be back well in advance of the November 2 season opener, so this isn't a huge problem. The bruiser was named the MVP of the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league after averaging 16.5 points and nine rebounds in six games. He has definite fantasy upside, but like most rookie, his value depends on how many minutes he'll see in Charlotte. September 13, 2005 4:44 PM ET

Extractions: Basketball News Services Since acquiring Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the Portland Trail Blazers are 6-7, and are trying desperately to fight their way into the playoffs. Last night, after the Blazers win over the Utah Jazz, Abdur-Rahim sat down with Basketball News Services to discuss his role on the team, what he brings to the table, and whether he can keep this up long-term. What is your role on this team? Shareef Abdur-Rahim: "Play hard. I don't think there is as big of a scoring burden on me here in Portland as there was in Atlanta. I think even in a situation where I'm not scoring I can still help create offense, get other guys shots, and bring scoring. I can score. That's what I've done my whole career, rebound, play defense, just play basketball and try to make something happen." Has Cheeks said anything to you about what he expects from you? Abdur-Rahim: "No, If he doesn't like what I'm doing then I guess he will say something to me, but I don't think I necessarily need him to identify a role for me. I know what I can do on a basketball court, and through that I just go out and play. Try to do something good in the time that I'm given, like I said I can score myself, I can create shots for other guys, I can rebound... So, I mean, I think everybody is making an issue out of it, but it's not really an issue. If I was upset I would say I'm upset. But I understand the situation and I'm fine."

Extractions: Dateline: 04/10/97 This year's NBA rookie class really should be in class , not playing in the NBA. OK, OK, OK, what value does Shakespeare have to boys that make millions by Duncan on Othella? Absolutely nothing, but much ado should be made about the fact that the rookies of the past few seasons have been raw and aren't improving themselves or their teams very much. Nearly all of the top rookies this year Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Ray Allen, Kobe Bryant, Marcus Camby, Allen Iverson, Kerry Kittles, Stephon Marbury, and Antoine Walker all except for Kittles joined the NBA without completing their college eligibility. All of them, except Kittles, have played like it. For instance, something very typical of rookies is to commit a lot of turnovers. All of them have done so, except for Kittles. As a percentage of the possessions they used, these are the number of turnovers they committed: Player TO/Poss Abdur-Rahim Shareef Allen Ray Bryant Kobe Camby Marcus Iverson Allen Kittles Kerry Marbury Stephon Walker Antoine Even though it is typical for rookies to commit a lot of turnovers, these numbers are concerning because of the recent trend showing young players not improving. An easy example is last year's Rookie of the Year winner, Damon Stoudamire. He has not improved in a single area this season, unless you count his 1% improvement in free throw shooting. A second example is Jerry Stackhouse, who has also improved in no area but free throws by a whole 2%. How about Joe Smith, whose bread and butter in college was crashing the offensive boards, but whose second year in the NBA has shown an enormous drop in offensive rebounds. And then there is Chris Webber, whose dynamic inside game on a good Warriors team as a rookie has turned into all too many three pointers on a mediocre Bullets team. He actually had his best season as a rookie.

I didnt go for his fake, though, and when he rose for the lay-in, I went with him, swatting his shot out of bounds and off the brick wall of the gym. A moment later, I checked the ball into play for Reef, who took the rock, crossed me over and pulled up for a three, draining it. Of course, this was in 1990. I was in 11th grade, the backup point guard on the North Fulton High School basketball team in Atlanta, a team that would go on to be ranked number three in the country by USA Today. Shareef was a 5-10, 13-year-old eighth grader who was serving as our unofficial manager and occasional pickup player. When we played in the Peach State Classic tournament over the winter holidays and stayed in an upscale downtown Atlanta hotel, Shareef was dubbed our sub-rookie, sleeping on the floor in our hotel rooms and keeping track of our warm-ups and towels. He was just a kid. Our goal was winning a state championship; Shareef was barely an afterthought to us. What we didnt know at the time was that Shareef was watching us. Closely.
Extractions: Nets-Abdur-Rahim EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The New Jersey Nets on Tuesday rescinded their trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and acquired forward Marc Jackson from Philadelphia. Advertisement The Abdur-Rahim trade was put on hold last week after the nine-year veteran failed a physical. The Nets didn't disclose the nature of the medical problem, but team president Rod Thorn said it was something neither Abdur-Rahim nor the Trail Blazers knew about. ``Obviously we weren't aware of it, and after all the conversations back and forth, I don't think the player was aware there was any problem,'' Thorn said. ``He hadn't missed any games regarding this. To my knowledge, (Portland) wasn't aware of it.'' The Nets had planned to use their trade exception to acquire the 29-year-old Abdur-Rahim, who has averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in nine years with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. With the trade exception scheduled to expire at midnight Tuesday, New Jersey was forced to scramble to make a deal. ``We had a list of guys we had interest in, and he was at the top of our list,'' Thorn said. ``We thought he would fit in very well with us.''
