Extractions: February 8, 1999 This article takes a look at how the New York Mets did in the 1998 season relative to pre-season expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1998 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews Projected Actual Runs for 687 706 Runs allowed 667 645 Run Margin 20 61 Wins 84 88 Pythagorean wins 83 88 Placement 2nd 2nd The general perception among fans and reporters was that the Met front office had done little to improve their club before the 1998 season. They picked up a couple of pitchers from the Marlins in the fire-sale down in Miami and signed Masato Yoshii from the Japanese league. But it was the Marlin that they didn't get, Gary Sheffield, that seemed to disappoint many following the club. By the end of May, GM Steve Phillips would land another Marlin, Mike Piazza, and effectively end complaints about the team's penny-pinching ways. The Mets scored 19 more runs than projected in 1998. Piazza accounted for more than that all by himself, meaning that the rest of the team did slightly worse than expected. The outfield was to blame for this, as Huskey, Gilkey, Phillips and Hundley all hit poorly last season, effectively negating outstanding seasons from Piazza and Olerud.

Extractions: KOBE (Kyodo) The Orix Buffaloes said Monday they have rehired veteran right-hander Masato Yoshii, just months after releasing the former major-league player. The 39-year-old Yoshii passed a tryout held at Orix's spring training camp in Okinawa and will play under manager Akira Ogi, his mentor at the Kintetsu Buffaloes. "I am grateful to the club for giving a player who has not been doing it for the last two years a chance," said a relieved looking Yoshii, who signed for 5 million yen plus performance related incentives. Yoshii played for now-defunct Kintetsu from 1985 to 1994 before playing for the Yakult Swallows for three years. He moved to the major leagues after the 1997 season and went 32-47 in his stints with the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and Montreal Expos. He joined the Orix BlueWave in 2003 but was limited to two wins against eight losses in 27 games in two seasons. Igawa re-signs OSAKA (Kyodo) Hanshin Tigers left-hander Kei Igawa on Monday signed a new contract with the Central League club after giving up on a move to the major leagues this season.

Nihongo Yakult Swallows history Although they won four pennants from 1992 to 1997, the Yakult Swallows have been one of the Central League's weakest teams for the last five decades. Only one Japanese team, the Yokohama BayStars, have compiled a lower franchise win-loss record since the establishment of the two-league system in 1950. Established in 1950 by Kokutetsu Railways, the Swallows joined the Central League, which was also founded the same year. Typical of an expansion franchise, the Swallows finished their first season in seventh place with a 42-92 record, 57.5 games behind the first place Shochiku Robins. With a team .244 batting average and 4.67 ERA, neither their hitters or pitching staff could compete with other teams in the league. But Kaneda's pitching (23-13, 229 strikeouts), wasn't enough to keep the team from sliding to last place in 1953. While their pitching staff improved, Kokutetsu's batting provided few sparks. That pattern would continue for nearly two decades. In 1956, the Swallows team batting average fell to .218. But Kaneda, who won three consecutive Sawamura Awards and twice led the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA) prevented Kokutetsu from dropping into last place.

Extractions: Yakult Swallows 1998 Outlook YAKULT SWALLOWS: Players Past Stars History ... 1997 Review 1998 Outlook Manager Farm Team Jingu Stadium 1998 Schedule In 1998, there are again questions about Yakult's chances of taking the Central League pennant. Manager Katsuya Nomura, usually pessimistic, is downplaying his team's chances of returning to the Japan Series. The Swallows lost Terry Bross, who had a bad year in 1997, and ace starter Masato Yoshii, now playing with the New York Mets. Pitching appears to be the Swallows weak spot. But Yakult still features a pretty strong pitching staff, even without Yoshii and Bross. Kazuya Tabata was one of the league's best hurlers in 1997, and rehabilitating lefty Kazuhisa Ishii had a great year. In addition to no-hitting the BayStars on September 2, Ishii earned 120 strikeouts (fifth in the league, despite missing the first two months of the season), and a 1.91 ERA. Several other Swallows hurlers have shown ability in the past but have struggled in the last few years. Still, to bolster the team's starting rotation, Nomura is planning on shifting closer Tomohito Ito (19 saves, 1.51 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings in 1997) to the starting rotation. Also, the Swallows have picked up two hard-throwing foreign players, Mark Acre and Travis Driskill, as well as former Seibu ace Hisanobu Watanabe.
