Extractions: We should also recall that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the inception of the baseball exchange between Japan and the United States. A team composed of Waseda University students visited the United States in 1905 as the first Japanese baseball team to play in the U.S. The relationship between Japan and the United States began in 1853, when Admiral Commodore Matthew Perry arrived at Tokyo bay. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the early 1870s. Thus there was only a 20-year baseball gap during our 150-long history of Japan-U.S. relations. The interaction between the two countries through baseball harkens back to the first international game between Ichiko (the First High School) and the American residents of Yokohama in 1896. But the inception of true international exchange occurred when the Waseda University baseball team traveled to the U.S. in 1905. In 1908, the Reach All-American team stopped in Japan during its world tour, giving the Japanese people their first opportunity to see American professionals. The celebrated arrival of the U.S. Major League All-Star Team including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1934 had a huge impact on the Japanese people. In the wake of straight defeats, the Japanese people felt that the establishment of a professional league was indispensable to the improvement of the sport in Japan. It was only one month later that the first professional team, the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants, was formed. International exchanges proved a decisive impetus to the development of Japanese professional baseball.

Extractions: The 2001 US Major League Baseball (MLB) season heralded greater prominence for a relatively new presence in the American national pastimethat of Asian baseball players. Ichiro Suzukibetter known as Ichiro after dominating Japanese pitchers for seven years, joined the Seattle Mariners as the first Asian-born position player to sign a major-league contract. He became the American League (AL) batting champion and top vote-getter in the All-Star Game, earned both a Silver Slugger Award and a Gold Glove Award, and was elected both AL Rookie of the Year and AL Most Valuable Player (MVP). Ichiros achievements, which made him a household name in the United States, were not last seasons sole accomplishments by Asian defectors to the major leagues. Hideo Nomo, a previous recipient of Japans equivalent of the Cy Young Award for pitching success in a season, threw his second career no-hitter for the Boston Red Sox this past April. South Korean-born Byung-Hyun Kim led the World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks in saves, playing an integral role in their yearlong success before faltering in two World Series games. Japanese Kazuhiro Sasaki served as the Mariners closer in the most successful season of the franchises history. Other Asian exports have become significant players in North America, including Japanese Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Masato Yoshii, and Hideki Irabu, as well as South Koreans Chan-Ho Park and Sun-Woo Kim.

He is once again showing everyone why he was the Rookie of the Year, by gaining his fourth win and lowering his ERA to 4.01. On Wednesday afternoon, Nomo went up against the Chicago Cubs, one of the organizations who gave him up earlier this season. He pitched for seven solid innings, giving up just two runs (all earned) and striking out seven batters, including right fielder Sammy Sosa. Not only is he impressive as a pitcher, but also as a batter. In just three at-bats, Nomo had two hits, including one RBI, raising his average to a high .294.

Extractions: When Hideo Nomo made his pitching debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995, he was something of a novelty. Sure, the guy could pitch, but what really energized fans on both sides of the Pacific was the fact that an Asian player had managed to make it in American big-league baseball. And not just make it, but dominate it. Nomo, who had pitched for the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Japan before heading West, won 13 games that year and was selected as the starting pitcher on the National League's All-Star team. The new season heralds another milestone: Asia's baseball exports are no longer limited to pitchers. It's a significant breakthrough in the continuing effort to knock down stereotypes and other barriers that have kept Asian talent out of North America. Once, conventional wisdom held that Asians simply lacked the skills and physical strength to make it in American baseball. That notion had to be revised after the success of small but lethal pitchers like Nomo and Yoshii. And now a few Asian "everyday players"catchers, infielders, outfieldersare lacing up their spikes in the West. These pioneers include Taiwanese outfielder Chen Chin-feng of the Los Angeles Dodgers and South Korean first baseman Hee Seop Choi, whose powerful swing and smooth fielding skills have prompted the Chicago Cubs to list him as their No. 2 prospect. Time to rewrite conventional wisdom yet again.

Among the items he brings back from the United States are a baseball and bat, the first ever seen in Cuba. Havana -born third baseman Esteban Bellán joins the Troy Haymakers, a top semipro team. When the Haymakers become charter members of the National Association two years later, Bellán becomes the first Latin American player in professional baseball. (He may also have been the first Latino major leaguer; however, historians disagree as to whether the NA can be considered a major league.) Baseball is introduced in Japan by American teacher Horace Wilson. The game catches on in part because many think it embodies the spirit of wa , the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the good of the group.

Extractions: Washington, DC, Mar. 14 (UPI) Washingtonians will no doubt remember the year 2005 when America's national pastime returns to their city, as the new Washington Nationals will start playing baseball in April. However, we should also recall that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the inception of the baseball exchange between Japan and the United States. A team composed of Waseda University students visited the United States in 1905 as the first Japanese baseball team to play in America. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan and the United States. It has played an important role in deepening the mutual understanding between the two peoples. A century ago, no one could imagine that both Japanese and Americans would become excited by Ichiro Suzuki's breaking the Major League all-time record for single season hits and by Hideki Matsui's remarkable performance in post-season games. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the trans-Pacific exchange of baseball, this essay will recount the history of the growing interaction between the two countries through their national sport.
Extractions: Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

While this might not seem a remarkable event to those of you in California, trust me, it is. This is a shot and a beer and fried-in-oil kind of town. We only got Sushi restaurants a few years ago. Around the time we first got sushi, it looked like the Pirates were leaving town to escape the concrete albatross of Three Rivers stadium and a demographic nearly as decrepit. As a testament to the ability of humans to adapt, and yes, to surprise, now we've got a ballpark here one that serves sushi. Gushing about PNC Park aside that will come in a future column I enjoyed an extremely tasty sampler of imported Japanese baseball this weekend, too. It came by the name of Tsuyoshi Shinjo, 29 year old rookie fourth outfielder for the New York Mets. I strongly suspect Shinjo's name is going to be lost to history in the shadow of Ichiro, the greatest one-named artist known by an unpronounceable symbol since Prince. Ichiro, by virtue of tonight's start in Seattle, will go down in baseball history as the first Japanese position player to pla y in the major leagues. Suzuki is a near-mortal lock for rookie of the year honors in the AL; batting champions are batting champions, and he looks like a live one.

Extractions: Game Play: Before we get started, I have to get this off my chest: I don't like baseball. I don't watch baseball. And I couldn't care less about baseball. On the other hand, I like this game! I've played a lot of really bad sports games for these reviews and this one of the best so far. It's not Fastbreak, whose twisted sense of humor appeals to me, but it is a heck of a lot better than RedZone or Top of the Order. In MLBS2000 (long name, huh?) you assemble a team made out of various Player cards, just as you would a real baseball team. Them, you and your opponents play a simulated game of baseball. The mechanics are lightning fast. The pitcher rolls a twenty-sided die and adds the number to his "Control" stat. If that is higher than the batter's "On Base" stat, the pitcher has the "Pitcher's Advantage," and if not, the batter has the "Batter's Advantage." Once the pitcher has determined this, the batter's player rolls the die and consults a chart. Which chart? Well, if the pitcher has the advantage, look at the chart on the pitcher card. If the batter has the advantage, look at the chart on his card. The charts list results such as Single, Double, Triple,Homer, Walk and Out. Each result has a number. If the batter rolls a 15, it may be a result of Out on the pitcher card, but a result of Single on the batter. It all depends on who has the Advantage. This mechanic takes approximately twelve seconds to master.

The stool beside his locker was empty his glove and spikes stacked neatly on the floor beneath his white, pin-striped game jersey. Teammate Brian Anderson knew that could mean only one thing. "B.K.'s asleep in the trainer's room again." Kim is a notorious snooze hound. He says his favorite hobby is sleeping and has been since his days at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, where his baseball coach routinely made him clean the toilets whenever he overslept and was late for practice. Kim is having trouble getting nap time these days. He's too busy giving interviews to the hordes of reporters who have descended on the desert Southwest United States to cover the Diamondbacks in their first World Series against the defending champion New York Yankees. Kim is a star, the latest in an explosion of Asian baseball stars who are making the game better and more universal than ever before.

The paper was full of plenty of stories profiling the Opening Series 2000 of the Major League Baseball season. (The Cubs and Mets will be in town for a pair of games at Tokyo Dome.) The press hacks from some of America's top rags and news services had obviously heavily researched their topic; articles were filled with a lot of unique items not typically mentioned in reference to Japan ( sushi , kimono, bowing, friendliness) - a sure sign that these fellows were doing some serious legwork. But a few things puzzled me. In talking about the reception the American players will receive in Japan, Shaun Powell of Newsday wrote: "They will get all the goods and none of the garbage. They will live the kind of public life every ballplayer craves. Right away, they will notice they are not in Chicago or New York anymore."
