In the Pacific League, the right handed hurler had the most success in the Kintetsu bullpen, earning 59 saves in a three year span (1988-90). But after a mediocre 1994 season (5.47 ERA, 7-7), the Buffaloes dumped what appeared to be a pitcher at the end of his career. Determined to prove Kintetsu wrong, Yoshii jumped leagues and joined the Yakult Swallows in 1995. A very consistent pitcher in his three years with the Swallows, Yoshii earned a 10-7 record in both of his first two years and a 13-6 record with a 2.99 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 174 1/3 innings. Yoshii may not strike out of lot of batters, but he doesn't issue many walks either. Though not the best hurler on the Yakult pitching staff, Yoshii was the most reliable. The gap his departure leaves on the Swallows' starting rotation won't be easily filled. In his thirteen seasons with the Buffaloes and Swallows, Yoshii compiled a 73-51 career record with a 3.42 lifetime ERA and 634 strikeouts.

Since Nomo, pitchers with good track records in Japan have been leaping across the Pacific one after the other. Four people since Nomo have entered the Major Leagues from professional baseball teams in Japan. (They were joined there by Nomo himself in June 1998.) All of these men are pitchers. Then there are the baseball players who skip Japanese pro ball entirely and knock directly on the Major League door. Sun set a new Japanese baseball record two seasons ago for most "save points" (saves plus wins) with his fast-moving slider. Sankei reveals that baseball has been played in China in the 1960's, where over 40 teams competed across the country, many of them made up of members of the People's Liberation Army. However, the Cultural Revolution reportedly put an end to the Chinese nines. Recently, though, baseball has seen a resurgence in the Communist state, with over 100 elementary and junior high schools holding hardball matches in the last decade. Guangxhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Tientsin are the four cities that will host pro clubs, with the Tientsin bunch already being touted as the strongest of the lot. However, the manager of Tientsin admits that their level of play is about that of the Japanese industrial leagues and slightly below that of the Taiwanese pro leaguers. Whatever the case may be, the squads will play four times a week, with the other three days given over to promoting the game by having the players visit elementary and junior high schools.

They helped to pioneer and innovate the game of baseball with an American spirit of style and play. Seattle and Hawaii Nisei teams played the Universities in Japan from 1914 to1923. California teams from Fresno, Stockton, San Jose, Los Angeles and Alameda made there early tours starting in 1924 to 1937. The long ocean journey took 15 days on a boat. In 1934, an American major league Hall of Fame team came to Japan led by Babe Ruth. The All-Japan Team was selected from the best players of the nonprofessional teams to compete with these legendary players. With these members as its core, the first professional team, the Dai Nihon Baseball Club, was organized at the end of 1934, and by 1936 seven professional teams had been formed. After playing professional football for the 1947 Forty-Niners, Wally Yonamine signed with the Yomiuri Giants in 1951 and played till 1962 leaving the game with one of the highest lifetime batting averages at .311 Wally went on to Coach and Manage from 1963 to 1988. He was inducted into the Japanese Hall of Fame in 1994. The present two-league system, consisting of the Central League and the Pacific League, was set up in 1950. Each league has six teams, all of which are owned and sponsored by large corporations. The Central league has the Yakult Swallows, Chunichi Dragons, Yomiuri Giants, Hanshin Tigers, Yokohama BayStars and the Hiroshima Toyo Carp Team. The Pacific League has the Seibu Lions, Nippon Ham Fighters, Orix BlueWave, Kintetsu Buffaloes, Chiba Lotte Marines and the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks.Each team plays 230 games between early April and early October. The regular season is followed by the Japan Series, a seven- game match between the two league champions.

His outlandish corkscrew delivery may have helped draw even more media glare than was warranted by his meteoric rise and fall (and recent re-emergence) as a pitching talent. His Dodger teammate Chanho Park, who came from Corea in 1995, showed that an Asian hurler could have staying power too not to mention ultimately command seven-figure annual salaries. Now the Mariners are stealing the Asian baseball spotlight with the dazzling $13 million Ichiro Suzuki. Halfway into his rookie season here, he was leading the league in hits and steals, not to mention drawing $2 million magazine offers to pose nude. His reward an All-Star slot along with Chanho Park. Even better, their respective teams stand an excellent chance of meeting in the World Series. Currently six other Asian ballers mostly Japanese and Corean imports are playing in the American majors and are, for the most part, doing well. That's why scouts are now laying the groundwork for importing as many as 15 more young stars from Japan, Corea and even Taiwan in time for the 2002 season. Admittedly, even a contingent of 24 Asian ballplayers would be only 5% of a combined major league roster of about 500. But if Nomo, Park and Suzuki are any indication, they could have a significant impact on the Asian male media image.

The National League baseball team played in Candlestick Park (later renamed 3Com Park), where the chilled wind off the San Francisco Bay blew dust and popcorn bags, and people bundled up as if they were prepared for snow. Some strong gusts even blew pitchers off the mound. Candlestick was also a faceless kind of place, functional but unimaginative. You went for the baseball, not for the architecture. But this year, the Giants have a new, warmer home-often described as an "intimate" place to see baseball. Pacific Bell Park, or "PacBell Park," as the locals call it, is named for the local telephone company, which paid millions of dollars for the privilege. Like the new ball parks in Baltimore, Cleveland, and Colorado, PacBell was designed to evoke baseball of old, before it was played in big stadiums that also host football in winter. These new venues have a sensual contradiction-they look as if they should smell of cigars and have decades of dirt ground into the floor. Except that the litter is picked up, smoking is mostly banned, and the turnstiles contain barcode readers linked with a customer database. On a balmy spring morning, with the team playing in Florida, I drove out to the ball park to meet with Bill Schlough, vice president and chief information officer for the San Francisco Giants. At age 30, Schlough has gotten around. He did technology consulting for Electronic Data Systems, supporting clients like Advanced Micro Devices, Amdahl, and Grumman. But his real love is sporting events. In 1994, Schlough served as the technology manager at Stanford University when it hosted part of the World Cup soccer tournament. "Once I got into the event industry, I got hooked," he recalls. Schlough became a consultant to the Atlanta Olympics and, later, the Atlanta Braves baseball club. After picking up an MBA from the Wharton School, he moved west to build PacBell's information infrastructure from the ground up. The building is almost complete.
