And as much as it pained me to do it, I knew that I had to remind Mr. Ryan that I was well-deserving of his respect because I was the sleek, new model and he was, sadly, on the fast-track to retirement. So, I charged the mound.

The Commissioner 06-15-2003, 10:41 AM Kamm had some very good seaosn, but I had to go with Ventura. The combination of power and glovework gives him the edge. I was surprised to see Bill Melton not also in the mix? I imagine he would garner some support. Hammerin Hank 06-15-2003, 11:22 AM I knew I was probably forgetting someone. Anyway, I just added Melton. 06-16-2003, 06:35 PM Melton had more power than Ventura.Ventura had the better range and glove, only because of Melton's back pains in the 70s.So,I give the nod to Robin. AutoMick 12-02-2003, 02:39 AM Willie Kamm was always considered the best until Robin Ventura came along.

This site is a tribute to my favorite baseball player- Robin Ventura. Over his year major league career, he played on teams: from the Chicago White Sox; from the New York Mets; from my favorite team the New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, from Sadly, Robin retired after the season, leaving a place in many fans' hearts. A great number of baseball fans know him as the former leader in grand slams among all current major leaguers or the man who suffered a very severe, almost career-ending injury to his leg and ankle while sliding into home during a White Sox spring training exhibition game in But it's the little things that made Robin the great ballplayer he was: his Gold Gloves, his good eye when batting, his ability to come through in the clutch when his team really needs him. (If you're a fan of Robin, the Mets or the Braves, or even just a casual baseball fan who likes to follow all the playoff action, I'm sure you remember his "grandslam single" that beat the Braves in Game of the NLCS.) Robin really was a great player who overcame a lot of diversity in his career
Extractions: By By JOHN NADEL Ventura told teammates of his decision last week, but waited until the Dodgers' postseason run ended Sunday night to make his announcement public. "I'm absolutely positive. I've realized that it's time to go, and that's it," Ventura said after the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to St. Louis 6-2, eliminating them from the NL playoffs. Ventura, a .267 career hitter, leaves with 294 home runs, 1,182 RBIs and six Gold Gloves for his work at third base. "I've been fortunate in the four years I've managed in the big leagues to be around some very professional people," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said Monday. "Robin Ventura transcends about every possible thing you can think of when it comes to professionalism." Ventura said the limitations of an arthritic right ankle played a role in his decision. He broke his ankle during spring training in 1997, a gruesome accident on a slide at home plate. "I knew my ankle has been progressively worse each year," he said. "I knew it wouldn't be fair to Tracy to come back here and, if somebody got hurt, not be able to be more than just a pinch-hitter."

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Robin Ventura went to the 2002 All-Star Game in Milwaukee, representing the Yankees in his first year with the team. Due to his sagging production this season, however, he wasn't invited to the midsummer party. Instead, the slumping Ventura got himself far away from baseball during last week's break. He didn't pick up a bat or a glove or think much about his laggard first half. That escape appears to have paid off for the veteran third baseman. He finally is showing signs of emerging from his prolonged slump, including two key hits in the Yanks' 4-2 victory last night over Baltimore. "I just had some good swings, and put it on the barrel," Ventura said after his 2-for-3 night. "I think I'm just trying to keep it simple. My swing just feels a little freer right now." Joe Torre has been monitoring the progress of a handful of slumping regulars, including Ventura, Bernie Williams and Raul Mondesi. All three contributed offensively last night, but Torre acknowledged he was "happiest" for Ventura "because he's been feeling it more than anyone else."
