Extractions: February 3 2001 : Think Back to May 28 : The Duel Uncountable acres have been deforested to print all that has been written regarding one of the greatest rivalries in sports history, the New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox. Fortunately, with publishing in the electronic medium, no more trees need share that fate in order for me to chronicle the historic meeting that took place on the 28th of May, 2000. It was always going to be a special game, as all Yanks/Sox battles are, but it was also a rare Sunday night game, on a three-day weekend, and slated to air nationally on ESPN. As the day of the game neared, though, it became obvious to all observers that the pitching rotation would pit former Red Sox ace Roger Clemens against the current man of that title, Pedro Martinez. Cy Young winner versus Cy Young winner. New generation versus old. Hope for the Red Sox Nation versus their cast-out champion. Not only that, the Red Sox and Yankees were see-sawing the lead in the AL East. In might have been May, but the game was as important as October. Think back for a moment what the world would be like if the Red Sox had kept Roger Clemens, instead of driving him to Toronto. They can't pin that one on Harry Frazee, the notorious team owner who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920. In fact, to fans of the Yankees, whose owner for many years went on shopping sprees for high priced free agent "stars," it seems downright backwards that so many of the great players to wear the Red Sox uniform in recent decades have all had suchwhat's the word?

Extractions: Since coming to St. John's 10 years ago, Red Storm Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer has preached the little things to his teams. It's the little things - the bunts, the sacrifice fly, the easy out, the cutoff man - that build winning teams. And in his nine years at the helm of the St. John's baseball program, the Red Storm have reflected their mentor's attitude. The 2004 team was a shining example of what Blankmeyer preaches. He wants student-athletes who are willing to work hard on the field, in the classroom and in the community It's that type of day-in and day-out commitment that Blankmeyer has practiced since his playing days and through his 25 years of coaching at the collegiate level. In 1995, after 14 years as the associate head coach at Seton Hall University, he was named Director of Admissions at that school, and served in that position for just over a year. During that entire time, his office window looked out at Owen T. Carroll Field, the home of the Pirates baseball team. It was tough for him to watch the field and know that he wasn't really involved in baseball anymore. So when the head coaching job at St. John's opened prior to the 1996 season, Blankmeyer didn't think twice about it.

Extractions: Info on BaseBall Back The Boston Red Sox gave it everything they had, but fell just short as they lost in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series to the defending champion New York Yankees, 6-1. It marks the end of a remarkable 1999 season for Sox manager Jimy Williams and the entire Boston Red Sox team. Picked to finish no better than fourth in the American League East by most of the so-called experts, the Red Sox surprised nearly everyone by winning the American League Wild Card finishing only four games behind the A.L. East Champion Yankees. The team then thrilled fans with their come-from-behind Division Series win against the Cleveland Indians. Yankees manager Joe Torre called this year's Sox team the toughest team the Yankees have had to play in the four years he's been the Yankees manager. "the way they played and it's a credit to Jimy they just wouldn't go away," Torre said. "They had a lot of tenacity and I congratulate them on the year they've had." Said Williams, who yesterday was named the American League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News, said, "This team is a special team. They did a lot for this city this summer. They hung tough and they hung together."
