On the ballot for the first time, Trammell isn't expecting to be elected to the Hall of Fame this year. But he'll be on the lookout for an assuring sign that he might make it someday. "I'd like to think so," Trammell said over the phone from his California home. "It's the highest honor for any player. I'd be overwhelmed." First things first, however. A year ago, there were three Tigers on the ballot for the first time, three of Trammell's teammates from the 1984 World Championship team. But the voters weren't kind to Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson and Lance Parrish. None received the required 5% of the vote to stay on the ballot.

Extractions: Main August 08, 2005 Trammell In Trouble? Rob Parker of the Detroit News lays the blame for the Tigers' season at the feet of Alan Trammell: When Trammell was hired, he promised that the Tigers would play a better brand of baseball, that they would play sound fundamentals and better defense. It just hasn't been the case. The Tigers, who led the AL in errors the previous two seasons, are still near the bottom this season. If the Tigers don't finish strong and get to .500, Trammell will be sent packing. After all, Trammell would have had three years to make this team better. And since the roster has improved dramatically since he first took over, the only place to find blame is with Trammell himself. Parker, however, overestimates the strength of the Detroit offense by using batting average as the measure. They're fifth in batting average, but tied for 10th in runs per game in the AL. That's not a good offense. Correction : I forgot the link.

Extractions: Main November 04, 2003 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch Edgar Martinez signed a one-year deal to stay with the Seattle Mariners today. He'll earn a minimum of three million dollars. The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency. But Martinez wants to finish his career with the Mariners, the only organization he's played for. "I'm very glad everything worked out and I'm coming back for another year," he said. "I think if we didn't reach an agreement, the chances that I'd stay home were a lot greater than I'd play for another team." I used to hear a lot about how players don't stay with one team anymore, but it seems a lot of recent stars had their careers in one city. Here's the list of all players who played at least 12 seasons and played for only one major league franchise: The number of players with one team did go down from the 1970's to the 1980's, and you have to figure in a couple of expansions. But it's not as bad as some people would have you believe. And it looks like Edgar Martinez will be another on the retired part of this list eventually. Extractions: Youngest Active Player Chronology When Hall-of-Famer Harry Wright played his first game of the 1871 season on May 5, 1871, he became the oldest person to ever play major league baseball. That's not to say that nobody ever took the field who was older than Wright's thirty-six. Rather, no player who was born earlier than Wright has ever played in the majors. Even with expansion, it's unlikely that Wright's record will be broken. As far as I know, there isn't a person alive who was born earlier than January 10, 1835. Pitcher Fred Chapman was the youngest player to make his debut (14 years 7 months 29 days). But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. At the end of the 1998 season, that distinction belongs to Pirates thirdbaseman Aramis Ramirez. Born June 25, 1978, he's more than a year younger than Kerry Wood and almost a month younger than Mike Caruso. No doubt, someone younger than Ramirez will make their major league debut sometime next year. One of the reasons this list is interesting is it helps to answer a question I'm frequently asked "who was the first person to reach the majors who was younger than me?" If you were born on June 1, 1969, the answer is Ken Griffey. Here's the list of players who have held the title "Baseball's Youngest Player."
