The Baseball Guru - Valuing Free Agents By Eric Gartman matt stairs doesnt really look like a baseball player. He is listed at 59 and 217 pounds. He looks like a rec league softballer who goes out after a game http://baseballguru.com/egartman/analysisericgartman04.html
Extractions: Eric Gartman Just look at the popularity of fantasy leagues. But valuing a free-agent player in the real world is no easy task. How can a GM predict the future production of a player? There are certain rules which should serve as guidelines for any GM looking at a prospective player. First is age: An average player will be in prime from about age 25-32. Afterwards, his productivity will drop off rapidly. Above-average players will be in their prime during these years, and still may produce for a couple of years afterwards. Superstars, however, can be productive well into their late thirties. Also important is not just quality during these peak year, but at what age a hitter started in the majors. A hitter who is putting up good numbers before age 25 will probably continue to do so past age 32. But beware hitters who start at age 25: Once past 32, they are a dangerous gamble. It is also important to note a hitters plate discipline. Predicting pitching is harder since pitchers often bloom late in the their careers. Furthermore, early bloomers tend to have arm trouble and often burnout early, like Dwight Gooden and Steve Avery.
The Cub Reporter: FIRST BASE Last Year: Matt Last year matt stairs (89G), Fred McGriff (49G), Ron Coomer (36G), Julio Zuleta (35G), baseball Encyclopedia. Read These TeamSpecific. NL Central http://www.all-baseball.com/cubreporter/archives/000768.html
Extractions: This year: McGriff The trade-deadline acquisition of Fred McGriff was supposed to put the Cubs over the hump and into the playoffs last year. Unfortunately, McGriff was too busy playing first base to help out in the bullpen. He did exactly what was expected of him in his 49 games: drove in 41 runs, slugged .559, and provided that ultimate intangible, protection, for Sammy. He also solidified a very quicksand-like first base situation. In the off-season, he decided to re-up, giving the Cubs a nice bridge to the future, Hee Choi, who will play in Iowa this season. Despite his advancing age, McGriff appears capable of ably manning his position and barring injury, you can pencil him in for 25-30 homers, 90-100 RBI, 900-950 OPS, and 30-35 Crime Dog references on SportsCenter. As for Julio Zuleta, it appears he cant even get a gig in Japan, so it may be Northern League time for him unless the Cubs can swing a deal with Anaheim. Posted on Mar 27, 2002 at 10:48 AM

Careers of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: March 20, 2002 Phoenix - Baseball locker rooms are filled these days with bulked-up power hitters who pump iron, gobble supplements and look more like bodybuilders than outfielders. Then there's Matt Stairs. It's not that the Milwaukee Brewers' rightfielder has a bad physique. It's that he has, well, no physique. At a squat 5-foot-9 and 220 pounds, Stairs is a pick-up truck in a pack of muscle cars. Balding and scruffy in a just-woke-up sort of way, he's a throwback player who gets his uniform dirty, doesn't take himself too seriously and isn't above pulling up a stool at the local watering hole. If Stairs, 34, produces the way the Brewers hope he can, Milwaukee is going to fall in love with this guy. He's as blue-collar as Cudahy.

Extractions: We all know there's no crying in baseball. Sometimes, too, there's no justice, either. Well, except for David, that is. Take the cases of Florida's Dontrelle Willis and Houston's Roger Clemens Both have pitched extremely well this season. Maybe even better than that. As the week drew to a close, Willis owned a 1.08 earned run average, having allowed just six earned runs in 50 innings. Clemens was right behind, possessing an ERA of 1.10 on a yield of only six earned runs in 49 innings. Yet Willis had a 7-0 record, while The Rocket's payload was a measly two victories, plus a loss. Willis came close to getting his first loss Wednesday night, but he beat offensively challenged Houston, 2-1, despite needing 48 pitches to get through the first two innings. He seems to think he can build a playoff contending team with a $30 million payroll, a football stadium, uncertain ownership, and indifferent fans. The A's really have become the red-headed stepchild of the Bay Area, with the Giants picking off the plum TV and radio outlets and opening a new stadium next season, while the Warriors and Raiders get Oakland to shell out big bucks to renovate their homes (trashing the A's home in the process.) The current A's owners had a deal to sell the team to a group that promised to keep them in Oakland, but major league owners effectively killed the deal by postponing any decision on ownership changes until their task force on small market teams completes its work. Even though the A's were in the wild-card race down the stretch, nobody came to see them.
