Ichiro Suzuki went 2 for 4 with an RBI single and a strikeout against Johnson, his first regular-season at-bats vs. the Big Unit. On his 119th pitch, he struck out slumping Bret Boone with two on to end the eighth. Pinch hitter Rey Sanchez opened the bottom half with a single off Jeff Nelson (0-1) and advanced on Derek Jeter's sacrifice bunt. Womack then bounced a single up the middle, giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

Extractions: By BILL MADDEN Jason Varitek of the world champion Boston Red Sox hopes to let his play do the talking this season. (Illustration by Ed Murawinski) Now it's on to the next 86 years. The curse-breaking celebrations in Boston will linger for another couple of weeks, until the world championship pennant is hoisted at Fenway Park and the Red Sox conduct their ring ceremony at the expense of the Yankees' pride. But as the Sox will soon find out, baseball is a "what have you done for us lately" business, especially in Boston, and the real challenge is repeating. Despite the defection of Pedro Martinez to the Mets, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein hopes he's made significant enough upgrades elsewhere David Wells over Derek Lowe at the back of the rotation, Edgar Renteria over Orlando Cabrera at shortstop, Jay Payton over Gabe Kapler as the fourth outfielder to keep a leg up on the Evil Empire. The biggest questions about the Red Sox are likely to be answered by the All-Star break, like whether free agent Matt Clement, cast off by three teams already, is really a big-time top-of-the-rotation pitcher (a la Pedro, the man he is replacing), and whether Wade Miller will justify their gamble on him and recover sufficiently from rotator cuff surgery to regain the form that made him a 16-game winner in 2001. There are also renewed physical questions regarding Curt Schilling, who missed much of the spring and struggled when he did pitch. Through all the questions, though, the Red Sox lost none of their championship chirp.

The AP article claims that the "Athletics shored up their outfield" in doing so, and "[t]he acquisition of Singleton allows the A's to move Terrence Long from center field to left field, which would improve their outfield defense." This leaves me with two questions: A) Who wants Terrence Long as a corner outfielder? His OPS (on-base plus slugging) was .688 last season. Only two starting major-league left fielders were worse than that (and they were both in New York: Rondell White and Roger Cedeno). Terrence Long is somewhat better than his 2002 season for his career, but we are only talking about a three-season career. Even if he performs at his career-average .740 OPS, he would still rank third worst in baseball based on 2002. The second question is B) Why does a team like Oakland that is built around on-base percentage sign dreck like Singleton of the .296 OPS in 2002? He walked 21 times in 466 at-bats this past season.

Extractions: December 10, 2001 If you haven't already done so, please read the introduction to the 2002 Gold Glove Review article for a summary of the techniques we use for evaluating defensive performance. Pitchers . There's a very strong tendency for Gold Glove voters to fixate on one guy and keep giving him the award year after year after year, as long as he doesn't get hurt or do anything to make it clear that something has changed. This tendency is especially strong for pitchers, perhaps because the voters don't get to see them as often. At other positions, we can judge performance over a span of 1,000 to 1,400 defensive innings, but even the most durable starting pitchers are in the field only for 200-250 innings. And relievers get only a fraction of the innings of a starting pitcher. With 14 or 16 teams in the league, a voter might get to see a certain shortstop play 80 innings in the field. That's not much in the context of a whole season, but it sure beats the 10-20 innings they might see of a starting pitcher or the 4-5 innings a reliever might pitch in those games. So it's hard for anyone to evaluate pitcher defense just by watching, because nobody is in position to watch enough pitchers in enough situations to get a complete picture. And it's hard to evaluate pitchers just by looking at their putouts and assists because a pitcher's tendency to induce ground balls can have a major impact on those numbers. Even if you're a brilliant fielder, you're not going to look good next to Greg Maddux if you're a fly-ball pitcher and they're using traditional fielding stats to evaluate you.

Its a tale of what happens when an energetic manager realizes that "the pursuit of truth [is], suddenly, the key to success," and that the possessors of this truth are outsiders shunned by the rigid hierarchy and insular mind-set that has dominated an industry for a century. You dont have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the story and thrill to its non-sporting implications. Beane is the most visible and successful proponent of a new school of baseball thought and scientific analysis that for the last quarter century has been demonstrating, in voluminous detail and with caustic wit, that much of what youve always known about the national pastime is just plain bunk. Dependable "clutch hitters"? They basically dont exist, study after "sabermetric" study has shown. ( Sabermetrics , a word coined by the disciplines revered popularizer, Bill James, is derived from the Society for American Baseball Research.) Pitching and defense win championships, right? They dont without good offense, James and others have shown. Are minor league and college statistics meaningless predictors of major league value, especially when compared to eyewitness observation? Actually, something much closer to the opposite is true.

Extractions: When the White Sox gathered at Comiskey Park today for a workout, the day began not with stretching, or calisthenics, or with some easy throwing. Instead, it started with the team gathering in left field, kneeling, and praying for several minutes in remembrance of the victims of Tuesdays tragedy. At 11 a.m., along with millions throughout the nation, the entire White Sox team put their heads down and a hush went over the entire ballpark. Moments later, as Manuel spoke with the media, there was a semblance of normalcy as players began to stretch, throw, and laugh among themselves. Even a plane flew overhead.
