Extractions: Firing Braves pitcher is letting him off too easy By Randy Horick We have an old saying in our family: "Never miss a good opportunity to shut up." In keeping with that time-honored philosophy, but eschewing it personally for the moment, let me offer a few helpful suggestions for some people. John Rocker: Shut the hell up. New York Media Geniuses: Shut up. Self-vindicated New York Mets fans: Shut up. Whiny, self-vindicated Yankees fans: Shuts up, youse, too. Pontificating, pompous, bandwagon-hopping politicians: Please, please, please shut up. (Then please go away.) George Steinbrenner: Don't even think about it. Purple-haired people on the subway, welfare mothers under 20 with four kids, gays, lesbians, fat monkeys, Japanese women drivers, foreigners, and denizens of "Beiruts" all over America: Get ready. If his employers have any sense or fortitude, John Rocker is going to be spending a lot of time with y'all. As even the most venom-dripping among his fellow New York haters will now admit, Rocker has been a very bad boy lately, not to mention a very boneheaded one. His recent sociological observations, all dutifully scribbled by a bug-eyed interviewer from

Opposing batters, who looked alternately foolish and cowed while flailing against the explosive offerings of the Braves closer, wished that he would just stay in the bullpen. His most vocal critics were Met fans, whose rancorous war of words with the impolitic southpaw spawned his infamous

Extractions: John Rocker (2/11/00) Atlanta Pitcher John Rocker as quoted in Sports Illustrated Observations: This country goes absolutely crazy whenever a bigoted statement is made to the mass media. Based upon the reaction, you would think that John Rocker had degraded Jesus from the pulpit of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Maybe its because we live in the South or in Texas, but his comments are similar to what is said every day in Decatur, Texas, over coffee. Come on, admit it.
Where Is The Left In John Rocker's Hour Of Need? Where Is the Left in john rocker s Hour of Need? By Brian Carnell Major LeagueBaseball ordered rocker to undergo psychological testing, http://www.leftwatch.com/archives/years/2000/000045.html
Extractions: Account Signup Where Is the Left in John Rocker's Hour of Need? By Brian Carnell Thursday, January 13, 2000 The only thing The Nation did was one of Calvin Trillin's annoying little poems about Rocker. It is interesting how the people who usually whine and moan whenever employers fire or discipline employees for their political or social beliefs disappear when the discipline is directed at people who hold views diametrically opposed to the Left. Imagine, for example, that Rocker in his Sports Illustrated interview had decided to emulate NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and suggested he no longer wanted to appear on the field during the singing of the national anthem, and as a result Bud Selig had ordered psychological testing for Rocker. Is there really any doubt that magazines like The Nation would immediately run to Rocker's defense and talk about the horrors of corporate suppression of free speech (in fact Abdul-Rauf had many left-liberal defenders when the NBA suspended him). Instead the general consensus seems to be that Major League Baseball is doing a good thing by disciplining Rocker for his private conversation with a reporter during baseball's off-season. That's fine, but remember folks that you can't have it both ways. You can't applaud baseball for taking action against Rocker and then turn around and say an employer who might discipline or fire a worker because of his Left views and activism is overstepping the bounds of the employer-employee relationship.
