Extractions: Youngest Active Player Chronology When Hall-of-Famer Harry Wright played his first game of the 1871 season on May 5, 1871, he became the oldest person to ever play major league baseball. That's not to say that nobody ever took the field who was older than Wright's thirty-six. Rather, no player who was born earlier than Wright has ever played in the majors. Even with expansion, it's unlikely that Wright's record will be broken. As far as I know, there isn't a person alive who was born earlier than January 10, 1835. Pitcher Fred Chapman was the youngest player to make his debut (14 years 7 months 29 days). But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. At the end of the 1998 season, that distinction belongs to Pirates thirdbaseman Aramis Ramirez. Born June 25, 1978, he's more than a year younger than Kerry Wood and almost a month younger than Mike Caruso. No doubt, someone younger than Ramirez will make their major league debut sometime next year. One of the reasons this list is interesting is it helps to answer a question I'm frequently asked "who was the first person to reach the majors who was younger than me?" If you were born on June 1, 1969, the answer is Ken Griffey. Here's the list of players who have held the title "Baseball's Youngest Player." Extractions: By BILL MADDEN Jason Varitek of the world champion Boston Red Sox hopes to let his play do the talking this season. (Illustration by Ed Murawinski) Now it's on to the next 86 years. The curse-breaking celebrations in Boston will linger for another couple of weeks, until the world championship pennant is hoisted at Fenway Park and the Red Sox conduct their ring ceremony at the expense of the Yankees' pride. But as the Sox will soon find out, baseball is a "what have you done for us lately" business, especially in Boston, and the real challenge is repeating. Despite the defection of Pedro Martinez to the Mets, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein hopes he's made significant enough upgrades elsewhere David Wells over Derek Lowe at the back of the rotation, Edgar Renteria over Orlando Cabrera at shortstop, Jay Payton over Gabe Kapler as the fourth outfielder to keep a leg up on the Evil Empire. The biggest questions about the Red Sox are likely to be answered by the All-Star break, like whether free agent Matt Clement, cast off by three teams already, is really a big-time top-of-the-rotation pitcher (a la Pedro, the man he is replacing), and whether Wade Miller will justify their gamble on him and recover sufficiently from rotator cuff surgery to regain the form that made him a 16-game winner in 2001. There are also renewed physical questions regarding Curt Schilling, who missed much of the spring and struggled when he did pitch. Through all the questions, though, the Red Sox lost none of their championship chirp.
Extractions: Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Extractions: Throws : Right Renteria is the third native of Columbia to play shortstop for the Red Sox. In 2004, Orlando Cabrera played the latter half of the season at that position for Boston and, between 1983 and 1985, Jackie Gutierrez spent his time in the six-hole. Renteria has won two Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger Awards to go along with four All-Star selections. In 2003 and 2004, he was voted by baseball fans to start at shortstop for the National League. Renteria has the unusual distinction of being the only player in history whose final at-bat ended two World Series. In 1997, he hit a game-winning single with the bases loaded for Florida in the 11th inning of the seventh game against the Cleveland Indians to give the Marlins their first World Series champions in the team's brief five-year history. Then, in Game Four of the 2004 World Series, he came to bat with two outs in the ninth for the St. Louis Cardinals against Boston's Keith Foulke and grounded out to the pitcher, giving the Red Sox their first World Series title since 1918. To the surprise of many, the Cardinal's potent offense struggled in the 2004 World Series and Renteria was one of only three positional players to average better than .250 (5-for-15 for a .333 average) at the plate.
