He's a little long in the tooth at this point, but he can still handel centerfield and can hit as much as half the players on MLB benches. Cabrera, the worst free agent signing in last years off season, is back for the Angels and blocks Maicer Izturis from every day duty. The Angels have as many grade B or better middle infield prospects as any team I've ever seen, everywhere on the developmental curve which makes the Cabrera signing so bad. Bill Stoneham is better than that normally. It also cost them Craig Hansen, when the Sox drafted him with compensation pick. posted by mdr at 7/17/2005 02:16:00 PM Post a Comment Name: Matthew Rauseo Location: New York, New York

Yet, we shouldnt take make the mistake of assuming that deafness is only a nuisance in the path toward the big leagues; just try playing a game of softball with cotton stuffed into both of your ears and feel the short-term havoc it plays with your equilibrium. Making the major leagues is tough enough; making the major leagues without complete use of one of your primary senses is downright laudatoryand testament to a players will and dedication to the game. For that, Curtis Pride deserves an added helping of respect. Although Pride is one of a handful of deaf players to make the climb to the majors, he is not the first deaf player in big league historyand not the most famous either. Both of those honors belong to 19th century legend William Dummy Hoy (unfortunately, Dummy was a commonly used nickname for players during the games early history). Both determined and athletic, Hoy not only overcame a lack of hearing but also proved that being 54 and 148 pounds doesnt necessarily exclude one from professional success on the ballfield. Hoys lack of size and absence of hearing discouraged major league teams from giving him a shot until he was 26, but the hardworking Hoy made up for his late start by collecting over 2,000 hits, batting .288, and playing a terrific center field (including one game when he threw out three runners at the plate). Some historians consider Hoy a player of sufficient quality to merit consideration for the Hall of Fame.

The graders of city and country were special guests of the evening and turned out in large numbers. Their lusty cheering for the home team was a feature of the game. No matter how high the score mounted their enthusiasm did not fail. Every goal brought a shriek of approval from the youngsters, always the most rabid of partisans. As to the game, it was all Winfield. Coach Martin's squad was somewhat weakened by ineligibility but the team carried on. There was some bad passing. Allen Fink had a bad night under the goals, but on the whole Winfield played good enough ball. The score was 9-0 at the end of the first quarter, 25-3 at the half, 48-5 at the end of the third period. Capt. Earnest Schmidt had a busy night, making a total of 31 points. He got 14 field goals and 3 free points. Bruce was also in form and got 19 points. Fink, who had plenty of shots close under the goals, made three of them good.

Extractions: by Ray Bergman Game 14 - Tigers vs White Sox at Tiger Stadium Well fans, here I am back again after taking a few days off from writing to refresh my mind and to give my ailing knee some time to mend. At the end of today's game I will have completed the first half of the dream trip, traveled some 7,000 miles, attended 14 ball games in 14 different stadiums and spent 25 days on the road away from home. Bring on the sencond half of my dream! I feel like a 20 year old rookie coming to bat for the first time. I am ready to play, so put me in, coach and lets get on with the middle innings. I had a short drive today from Benton Harbor, MI to Detroit (about 200 miles). It rained most of the way and I was in heavy bumper to bumper traffic several times. The road was generally flat, green and lightly wooded. A little dreary looking. The roads in Michigan are pretty well beaten up due to the harsh winters. In fact, the state roads resemble a patchwork quilt in many areas. I can see why they call this area the rust belt of America. As I drove into Detroit on my way to Tiger stadium I passed old steel plants, manufacturing plants, refineries and other grey, gloomy, ugly-looking buildings. I believe that Tiger stadium is the oldest ballpark in the Majors and it looks that way. However, there are several saving graces. It has real grass and it is not symetrical. The outfield has some unique corners and right center is 440 feet from home plate. The fans are so close to the action that someone in the center field seats can carry on a conversation with the fans behind home plate. That might be streching it a little bit, but not much. Even the broadcast booths are closer to home plate than the middle infielders which makes for some interesting calls on line drive foul balls.

The program will train a staff member from a regular school to serve as the schoolÕs Program Coordinator for one or more students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. This person may be a Teacher of the Deaf, a Special Needs Teacher, an Inclusion Specialist, a Speech and Language Pathologist, or other staff member who will have ongoing contact with the student and staff.

"Devean George's contributions to this playoff run had been as minimal as June rainfall in L.A.
