Extractions: Main April 30, 2005 Jorge Bonds With men on 1st and 3rd and one out, the Blue Jays walk pinch hitter Jorge Posada to face Tony Womack. It's an intersting move, in that it would have been easier to double Posada than Womack. And while you have a great chance to get Womack out, or cut down the runner at the plate, you have a great hitter in Jeter coming up next. Update : Womack hits a solid line drive single to right-center to win the game for the Yankees. Posted by David Pinto at 04:42 PM Games TrackBack (0) Comments Post a comment Name:
Baseball Musings: Patient Posada Calling jorge posada patient isn t enough anymore. He s way past that. Visit Busch Stadium Buy St. Louis Cardinal tickets and other baseball tickets http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/005503.php
Extractions: Posada's the man waiting on line to ride Space Mountain. He's the guy waiting for his girlfriend to finish in the bathroom. He's the fellow who could join an FBI stakeout team and feel right at home. And he's the Yankee who drew the key walk last night. Posada's remarkable patience continued to pay dividends last night, as his fourth-inning, bases-loaded walk drove in the Yankees' first run in their 6-1 win. Incredibly, Posada now has drawn six bases-loaded walks this season. And he now has five walks in the World Series, good for a .417 on-base percentage that masks his, ahem, .000 batting average (0-for-7). Of players who had at least five AB in a World Series without a hit, Posada's .417 OBA is way beyond the best. Darrel Chaney of the Reds was for 7 in 1972 with 2 walks and a hit by pitch for a .300 OBA. Unlike Posada, however, Chaney's two walks were intentional. Before the Red Sox-Yankees series, I wrote about the versatility of the NY offense
Extractions: Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.
Extractions: Bonafide Bomber By Jay Jaffe The area directly behind home plate in Yankee Stadium has played host to a pretty fair collection of ballplayers. Two Hall of Famers, Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra , have donned the tools of intelligence for the Yankees, and four men Dickey, Berra, Elston Howard and Thurman Munson have won a total of five MVP awards (three by Berra), five Gold Gloves (three by Munson) and made an astounding 42 All-Star teams. Not coincidentally, the uniform numbers of those four men have all been retired by the Yankees. Into the large cleats of these bronzed Bombers steps Jorge Posada , a man with four All-Star appearances already under his belt, not to mention a healthy third-place showing in the 2003 MVP vote. With relatively little fanfare, Posada has shown himself not only a solid, worthy heir to the men who've manned that hallowed spot of dirt, but also one of the league's most valuable players and arguably the best catcher in baseball. Along with Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera, Posada remains one of the shrinking core of homegrown Yankees who ushered in their recent dynasty, "Joe Torre's guys." He's the junior member of that quartet, playing only nine major-league games prior to 1997 while the other three figured prominently in the team's 1996 championship, their first under Torre. But he's become part of the old guard, a leader in the clubhouse as well as on the field, his fiery demeanor channeled to better use than simply goading Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez onto the same page. Following the Yanks' early ouster from the 2002 playoffs, Posada emerged as a
