Extractions: It's pretty easy to take a shot at the Orioles' brain trust on the Sidney Ponson matter, and I may just do that myself in a few paragraphs, but let's be fairthis isn't an easy call to make. For those of you of you unfamiliar with the situation, here's a brief recap. Ponson, who's making roughly $4.25 million this season, is eligible for free agency at the end of this season. He'll turn 27 in November and is in the midst of his sixth big league season. Baseball types have been raving about his talent for years. He has a decidedly plus fastball (two of them, actually) and better than average off-speed stuff, at this point. His first four big league seasons were, essentially, cookie cutters. He didn't progress one iota until his fifth year which, though superficially similar to the first four, showed clear signs of improvement. He is currently experiencing what is being termed a "break out" year, and has already set a career high in victories in a single season (with two months worth of starts remaining) and is likely to experience a career low in earned run average. If you read no further, you're undoubtedly wondering what the debate is about. The Orioles, a team notoriously in need of plus players to build around, have a young pitcher with a great arm, still quite young, who's taking major strides forward in terms of performance. What's the debate about? Sign this guy, and do it ASAP. Lock him up, for crying out loud!
