Extractions: By Louis Berney Sidney Ponson is eating a plate of pasta scampi at Amici's in Little Italy. This is his afternoon restaurant, the place he prefers to chow down before night games. He likes to go to Ruth's Chris for dinner when the Orioles play afternoon games, and occasionally the right-hander will scoot off to a Federal Hill diner if he's still hungry following a night game. When it's his turn to pitch, Little Italy is where Ponson will go for his pre-game meal. Ponson knows a bit about nutrition. Before he reached the big leagues, but after the Orioles already had recognized him as a major league talent, the club sent him to Duke University in the office season. The Orioles knew that he had an invaluable right arm. They wanted to be sure he used it more to throw a baseball than to stuff his ample body with heavy fats. Duke ran a nutrition program for athletes who tend, let's say, to be a little too eager at the dinner table and a little too gifted in girth. Ponson came back from Duke full of good habits.

Extractions: Main March 24, 2005 Swinging Sidney Sidney Ponson was involved in another fight . It seems a drunk would not let Sir Sidney alone: This time, Ponson was eating dinner with his girlfriend when a man approached and essentially challenged him to a fight, according to the pitcher and his agent. Ponson said the man eventually began to push the pitcher in the chest. "It kept going on and on; he was nagging me forever," Ponson said. "It was the worst I'd ever heard. Then he touched me, and I had to draw a line. ... You clearly could see the guy was intoxicated. It was one of those things, you can't do nothing about it." Praver said Ponson attempted to ignore the man, but the verbal abuse escalated to a physical confrontation. "It was one of those things, people are going to find out who I am, try to push my buttons. ... I held back as much as I could," Ponson said. I wonder why the resturant didn't step in and remove the man? Also, I suppose you have to be pretty drunk to think you can take on a professional athlete in a fight, especially one as big as Ponson.

Essentially, a high SNVA variance means that a pitcher has had wide swings in the quality of his starts. And sure enough, a look at Sidney Ponson's game log indicates that among his fourteen starts this season, he has had four quality starts (at least six innings pitched with at most three earned runs allowed) but also seven starts in which he has allowed six earned runs or more.

Get a competitive advantage in your league by subscribing today! Sometimes I can't believe the things we accept about this game. One of the great allures of playing fantasy you might even call it the foundation of the game is the sense of control it gives us. No longer do we have to sit back and question the decisions made by our home team's management. Fantasy gives us the opportunity to run our own team, to assess talent and project value, and to make the personnel decisions that shape our own fortunes. In auction and salary-cap leagues, we also play with economics, getting to build our team within a pre-set budget. But it all comes down to one central concept, that of taking control of our own destinies. The rules of the game foster this control. A player gets to be on our roster only if we say so. We get to trade these players to acquire more needed commodities. And we get to cut them when they pollute our statistics beyond our threshold for pain (which is, perhaps, the greatest sense of power known to man). Still, there are things we don't have control over. We can't control what numbers these players put up. We can't control their ability to stay healthy. We can't control what foreign substances they put into their bodies or how their off-field activities affect their on-field demeanor. But we can accept these variable elements of the game because, well, their

I said Ponson was worthless and should be removed from the team BY ANY MEANS NECCESSARY a while back. Check it out.. http://orioles.mostvaluablenetwork.com/index.php?p=185 What shocks the hell out of me is that he's pitched like the 8th most innings as an Oriole all time or something like that. He's had ONE winning season in his entire career, and even that season was nothing to write home about. Why in the name of all things holy has he been allowed to acrue the 8th most innings of any Orioles? I mean, do we have bobbleheads running the team? Don't bother trading him. Just find a way to negate his contract due to all teh legal trouble he's been in. There HAS to be a way. If not, pay him his $10 million to just go away. The money is better spent to keep him out of the game than it is to pitch him.

Extractions: Major League Baseball Graphs The Dirty Details Baseball Graphs Home 2003 Win Shares This is a list of all National League pitchers, ranked by Earned Runs Saved Above Average (ERSAA). ERSAA is a measure of how many runs the pitcher saved, given the number of innings he pitched, relative to the league. It's computed this way: League ERA minus pitcher ERA times innings pitched divided by nine, plus an adjustment for the home park. Lee Sinins uses the same statistic in his weekly stats report, only I believe he computes total runs saved, not just earned runs saved. I've supplied other rate stats, to give a bit more insight. In particular, I've included each pitcher's ERA and Innings pitched, as well as his FIP and associated DER. These are the exact same stats I use in the graphs, and they are defined in detail on the Details page . These two stats, by the way, seem to have about an equal impact on ERA, and they account for about 80% of ERA differences between pitchers. The rate stats are not adjusted for home park. The underlying source for this data is Doug . The home park adjustment comes from Patriot These stats are sortable. Click on the top of the column to sort by that item.
Sidney Ponson - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia sidney Alton ponson (born November 2, 1976 in Noord, Aruba) is a Major Leaguebaseball pitcher baseballReference.com - career statistics and analysis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Ponson
Extractions: Sir Sidney Alton Ponson (born November 2 in Noord Aruba ) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who has played most of his career with the Baltimore Orioles . When he made his debut for the Orioles in , he became the third player from Aruba to play in the major leagues. Ponson attended Maria College in Aruba. He was picked up by the Orioles as an amateur in . Except for a brief stint for the San Francisco Giants , he has spent his entire career in Baltimore. After the 2003 season, he was made a knight by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands . (Aruba is a colony of the Netherlands.) This has earned him the nickname "Sir Sidney". Ponson has acquired a reputation for being inconsistent, especially in relation to decision games. He has a strong fastball and a decent slider. He has also had problems with his weight over the last few years. In 2003, he went 14-6 with a 3.77 ERA for the Orioles. Because Baltimore was not in contention for a playoff spot and Ponson was in the last year of his contract, the Orioles traded Ponson to the San Fransisco Giants at the trading deadline for two Giants prospects ( Kurt Ainsworth and Damian Moss ). At the end of the 2003 season, Ponson re-signed with the Orioles for a 3 year, 22.5 million dollar contract.
