Extractions: Posted on Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 11:06:42 AM EST I can't think of too many things that would be sweeter than being a professional baseball player, but one of them would definitely be being a professional baseball player and living in the Caribbean paradise of Aruba. Then again, if you believe Baltimore Orioles pitcher Sidney Ponson, maybe it's not so sweet at all. Ponson is an Aruba native, and was decorated as a knight of the Order of the Dutch Royal House for his success in baseball. Ironically, it is Ponson's celebrity status that led him to allegedly punch a local judge at an Aruba beach party on Christmas Day, merely 3 weeks ago. The hefty, oft malcontented pitcher is now vowing to leave Aruba permanently, citing an inability to tolerate the attention, both positive and negative, that he receives on the island. Truthfully, I want to rip Ponson, who reported to training camp before the 2004 season at an unbelievable 266 pounds. However, spending a week in an Aruban prison as his holiday season wind down, would make just about anybody want to get the heck out of Dodge.

Extractions: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Lou Piniella savored a rare victory in which his last-place Tampa Bay Devil Rays played well in every phase of the game. "Good pitching, good defense and just enough timely hitting," the manager said, summing up Saturday night's 3-2 win over Sidney Ponson and the struggling Baltimore Orioles, who have dropped four straight and 16 of their last 24. Scott Kazmir pitched seven strong innings and Alex Gonzalez hit a solo homer off Ponson (7-9), subject of trade talks between the Orioles and San Diego Padres despite being 0-5 in six starts since last winning on June 18. Damon Hollins snapped a seventh-inning tie with an RBI single for the Devil Rays, who are 7-4 since a season-high, 10-game losing streak that ended July 9. The bullpen, a liability the first half of the season, is 1-0 and 6-for-6 in save opportunities since the All-Star break. Kazmir (5-7) allowed one run and four hits, struck out seven and walked three. Joe Borowski pitched the eighth, and All-Star Danys Baez allowed Miguel Tejada's 21st homer in the ninth before striking out Sammy Sosa and pinch-hitter Rafael Palmeiro to earn his 19th save in 25 chances.

This is the BaseballMuse take on what's happening in the world of baseball or anything else that is interesting to me at the time. Sidney Ponson won his first start of the season by giving up four runs over 5 2/3 innings on nine hits and two walks last week. For a fantasy baseball league manager, those are ugly numbers to be saddled with, but at least he got the win, right? For anyone who thought that and left Ponson in the lineup, let me offer my condolences. Those owners were not as lucky today as Ponson was pounded for nine runs on seven hits and four walks in just three innings. After being handed a 1-0 lead, he promptly allowed three runs in the bottom of the first, somehow managed a three up and three down second then allowed two more in the third inning and a three run jack to Carl Crawford in the fourth inning with no one out and walked one more (which came around to score) for good measure before leaving the game. I did not watch this game (so take my comments for what they are), but Sidney Ponson is putrid. I would not touch him with a ten foot fantasy baseball pole. He has now thrown 8 2/3 innings for his unlucky (or stupid) owners and given them a 13.50 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP. Oh, and you also got five strikeouts and one win for your trouble (how'd he win one? it's a miracle... it's a miracle). He has walked more than he has struck out and allowed 2 home runs. There, I have run down virtually every important statistic and can not find one to say anything good about. He has not had a good April in the last five years (maybe longer), including his career year in 2003 when he was 2-2 with a 4.80 ERA in April and it ended up being his worst month... those numbers would be welcome right now.

On Monday evening, he declined to waive his limited no-trade clause, thereby nullifying a trade that would have sent Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Sidney Ponson to the Padres in exchange for the first baseman. "I think I've said to people that the factors that would prevail would be reflected by the decision," Barry Axelrod, Nevin's agent, said. "If his baseball career would have taken precedent he would have gone to Baltimore. Even if it's going to be a diminished role in San Diego, honestly after he spent the day with his wife and kids it became clear to him. I was surprised it took him so long to say no."

With two starters with just one year each of major league experience and a fifth starter who was not named until the final week, Ponson was the least of the team's concerns heading into camp.
