Atlanta acquired Russ Ortiz from San Francisco in exchange for Damian Moss and minor league righthander Manuel Mateo. Depending on whether the Braves re-sign Greg Maddux and/or move John Smoltz back to the rotation, Ortiz could be their No. 1 starter in 2003. He filled that role with the Giants and was in line to receive the victory in what would have been a World Series-clinching Game Six before San Francisco's bullpen blew a 5-0 lead. A 28-year-old righthander, Ortiz won at least 14 games in each of his four full seasons with the Giants and hasn't missed a start during that time. He went 14-10, 3.61 with 137 strikeouts and 94 walks in 214 innings in 2002. He beat Atlanta twice in the Division Series, including the Game Five finale. Ortiz has a fastball that sits in the low 90s with heavy life, and he also throws a cutter, curveball and changeup. He has a lifetime record of 67-44, 4.01.

Extractions: Main December 10, 2004 Pitching Russ-lers The Diamondback continue to retool, signing pitcher Russ Ortiz to a four year contract . Ortiz will get a little over $8 million per year. I get the impression that the Diamondbacks are buying Russ' wins, not his ability. This deal reminds me of the time the Royals signed Storm Davis. Davis had gone 16-7 and 19-7 in the two years before he became a free agent. But he did that on a very good team, and his ERA was 4.36 in his 19-7 year. The Royals thought his wins came with him. His ERA went up to 4.76, and he went 7-10 for a bad Royals club. Ortiz's ERA has gone up 3 years in a row. The Diamondbacks are not a good team. Ortiz is a good, not great pitcher. He could easily be .500 or worse with the DBacks unless the rest of the team gets better. Posted by David Pinto at 08:42 PM Free Agents TrackBack (0) Comments Another bad signing of a pitcher. Just because there are only mediocre pitchers out there doesn't mean you have to pay them like front line starters. These teams are going to be hating their signings for the next 3 years. And of course they're going to complain about the skyrocketing salaries, when, in truth, it is all their fault. Posted by: shawn at December 11, 2004 11:05 AM

Extractions: Bombers have eyes for Ortiz Russ Ortiz The Yankees have begun widening their scope on potential starting pitching targets, asking the Atlanta Braves about the availability of righty Russ Ortiz , according to a baseball source. The Braves, however, are still deciding whether they want to trade Ortiz, who was a significant cog in their rotation last year, going 21-7 with a 3.82 ERA. The 30-year-old Ortiz is making $6.2 million and is a free agent after the season. The Yankees have spoken to the Mariners about Freddy Garcia , but they feel Seattle is not shopping the righthander yet. However, the Mariners have had several scouts trailing Yankee minor-league teams, including former GM Pat Gillick Ortiz is 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA this year. He is scheduled to start today against the Orioles in Baltimore.
New York Daily News - Baseball - 2005 Baseball Preview: NL West Preview If nothing else, the NL West qualifies as baseball s most intriguing division. Now it s russ ortiz and Yankee castoff Javier Vazquez topping a rotation http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/295043p-252603c.html
Extractions: By BILL MADDEN Felipe Alou will have to manage without Barry Bonds for at least half of the season. (Illustration by Ed Murawinski) If nothing else, the NL West qualifies as baseball's most intriguing division. Other than the Rockies, who remain in perpetual payroll-reduction mode, any one of the other teams the Giants, Padres, Dodgers or Diamondbacks can win this wide open division. That said, each has the potential for disaster. Start with the Giants, who underwent the most extensive offseason makeover of any NL West team, with GM Brian Sabean tapping into baseball's senior citizens' home to bring in shortstop Omar Vizquel (38), left fielder Moises Alou (39), catcher Mike Matheny (34) and closer Armando Benitez (33). The additions of Alou, Vizquel and Matheny to a starting lineup that already included the aging Ray Durham, Marquis Grissom, J.T. Snow and Barry Bonds give the Giants the oldest everyday lineup in baseball history. With Bonds out indefinitely, plagued by knee surgery and potential legal problems, the Giants could run out of gas in a hurry. For the Giants to contend without Bonds, the starting pitching behind staff ace Jason Schmidt has got to be better than just ordinary, as it was in '04. Upon restructuring their general partnership, ousting founding owner Jerry Colangelo in the process, the Diamondbacks proceeded to debunk the theory they were severely leveraged by doling out $76 million to upgrade the NL's weakest offense. They signed third baseman Troy Glaus and acquired Green from the Dodgers, then spent another $33 million for Braves 15-game winner Russ Ortiz. They also landed Javy Vazquez from the Yankees in a trade that subtracted Randy Johnson from the top of their rotation.

Extractions: All Baseball. All the Time. Brought to you by the Most Valuable Network. by ruz By John Shiffert #25, June 7, 2004 News Item: June 11, 1937 Wes Ferrell is traded by the Boston Red Sox (along with with Mel Almada and brother Rick Ferrell) to the Washington Senators for Ben Chapman and Bobo Newsom. Wes Ferrell could hit. He could also pitch, winning 193 games with an Adjusted ERA of 117. There were some pretty fair players changing teams in this deal between Boston and Washington, including a Hall of Famer and a 200-game winner, but, the best player was Wes Ferrell. Because Wes Ferrell was a good pitcher, and a good hitting pitcher a member of what is now a truly vanishing breed. Don Newcombe, Earl Wilson, Warren Spahn, Carl Mays, George Uhle, Reb Russell, Smoky Joe Wood, Walter Johnson, Al Orth, Guy Hecker, Jack Stivetts, the first Earl Smith, Parisian Bob Caruthers, Dave Scissors Foutz those were just some of the good hitting pitchers of the past. In fact, Russell, Wood, Orth, Hecker, Stivetts, Caruthers and Foutz all played in the field a fair amount, to get their bats in the lineup, with Smith, Russell and Wood, like that Babe Ruth character, eventually becoming full-time outfielders. In fact, Hecker, by many accounts, even won the 1886 American Association batting average crown (.341), in a year in which he also won 26 games and threw 421 innings for Louisville. However, of the pitchers who stayed the course on the mound, Ferrell might have been the best hitter of all.
