Extractions: BOX SCORE GAME LOG CLEVELAND (AP) The Boston Red Sox encircled Pedro Martinez in their clubhouse, pouring champagne on their star pitcher as the walls shook to a salsa beat. If Martinez didn't completely exorcise Boston's curse, he certainly found a temporary cure. Pedro Martinez gets carried off the field after pitching the Red Sox past the Indians.
Extractions: Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.
Blissful Knowledge: THERE'S A SHOCK: About 18 Archives he would have been recognized as one of the best GMs in baseball. players like Brian Daubach, troy O Leary and Tim Wakefield for nothing. http://www.blissfulknowledge.com/archives/000352.html
Extractions: If Duquette had stepped down before the 2000 season, he would have been recognized as one of the best GMs in baseball. At that point, he had led the Sox to a division title in 1995 and consecutive wild-card berths in 1998 and 1999 and built the foundation for a great team with Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra. The farm system looked at least OK, and he had shown that he knew the value of the waiver wire, acquiring good complementary players like Brian Daubach, Troy O'Leary and Tim Wakefield for nothing. And he had just traded for what looked like an outstanding complementary bat in Carl Everett. People did not laugh when Sports Illustrated picked them to win the 2000 World Series. What happened? With the Red Sox on the brink of a championship, he did what other teams have done (such as the Yankees in the 1980s): he made moves designed to put them over the top which only pushed them further away. He forgot what he had learned about the waiver wire: you can find complementary players for nothing, so it makes no sense to: a) trade good prospects for expensive veterans when you can find cheaper players who will do the same thing at little cost, and b) give long-term contracts to your waiver-wire finds, because you can find cheap replacements where the originals came from. He did both those things; trading Dennis Tankersley for Ed Sprague, Chris Retisima for Dante Bichette, giving a long-term deal to Troy O'Leary, getting suckered into taking the contract of Mike Lansing.... Trades like those depleted the farm system, which is now one of the worst in baseball.

Extractions: December 14, 1999 This article takes a look at how the Boston Red Sox did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews Projected Actual Runs for 856 836 Runs allowed 828 718 Run Margin +28 +118 Wins 83 94 Pythagorean wins 84 93 Placement 2nd 2nd In 1998, Boston surprised a lot of people by finishing with the second-best record in the AL (92-70). They did it with a balanced team effort that ranked second in the league in staff ERA, third in runs scored, and fourth in fielding percentage. Most years, their run margin of 876-729 would have been good enough to win the division, but the Yankees won 114 games and ran away from everyone. Despite that strong performance and the likelihood that the Yankees would be unable to match their dream season, it was still hard to imagine that the Red Sox would be able to give the Yankees much of a fight in 1999. The attack couldn't help but suffer from the loss of Mo Vaughn and the return to normal of some mediocre hitters (such as Darren Lewis and Damon Buford) who were coming off career years. And the key additions to the pitching staff, Pat Rapp and Mark Portugal, were nothing to get excited about. Most preseason publications picked them to finish fourth in the division.

While they never threatened the record-setting Yankees for the division title, they had the second-best record in the AL for almost the entire season. Their hold on the wild-card spot was threatened briefly in September, but the Blue Jays faded and the Sox qualified for the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. The team began the season with some apparently big holes in their offense. They lost 2B Jeff Frye for the year when he blew out his knee early in spring training, forcing them to choose among 2Bs Donnie Sadler, Mark Lemke, and Mike Benjamin, none of whom was expected to do much at the plate. Odds were that their entire starting outfield (O'Leary, Bragg, Lewis, Buford) would combine for fewer HR than some individuals on other teams (Belle, Ramirez, Griffey). Offensively, the catching position became suspect when management concluded that Jim Leyritz was not good enough defensively to play ahead of Jason Varitek.

Hutchison, celebrating his 21st birthday, allowed three hits and walked one in relief of starter Chris Mabeus, who was credited with his 11th win of the season against no losses. Hutchison relieved Mabeus in the sixth and surrendered an RBI single to centerfielder Eric Darjean, which cut the Warriors' lead to 4-3. But, he then retired the side in order in the seventh. In the eighth, Craig Mills reached on an error but Hutchison got the next three batters out.
