Extractions: By Bob Queenan, Post staff reporter The Reds are interested in Boston Red Sox free agent infielder Tim Naehring, club officials said Friday. ''We have expressed interest in Tim, who filed for free agency only yesterday,'' said Reds general manager Jim Bowden. The Red Sox declined a $3.25-million option on the 6-foot-2, 203-pound third baseman, making him eligible for free agency. Naehring, a graduate of La Salle High School who played at Miami University, did not play in 1998. He spent the season recovering from offseason surgery on the right elbow of his throwing arm. The injury occurred when he made an off-balance throw in Toronto in June 1997. Naehring suffered a torn ligament and a tear in the capsule that holds the joint together. ''We're in the development stage of our club, and a player like Tim would add to our veteran leadership,'' said Darrell ''Doc'' Rodgers, the Reds assistant general manager. Naehring was vacationing and unavailable for comment, said an associate at Athletes Reaching Out, a charity he started three years ago. Attempts to contact his representative, Boston agent Greg Clifton, were unsuccessful. ''A healthy Tim Naehring can flat-out hit the baseball,'' said Bowden. ''He knows how to play the game and would definitely join Barry Larkin and Bret Boone as positive examples of how to play the game. He is also a performer who would benefit a club after his playing days are over.

Peter Gammons Q What chances do you give Mike Greenwell to come back and play majorleaguebaseball? Do you see tim naehring becoming a GM sometime in the near future? http://espn.go.com/gammons/s/2001/0326/1162329.html
Extractions: Mailbag: March 26 Q: With the flood of average talent riding the benches around the league, do you think that teams should promote youth a little quicker to give them time on the bench and to see major-league pitching? For example, should the Braves release Keith Lockhart and promote Wilson Betemit so that the future of the team can begin to take shape? In the early '90s the Braves brought up everyone. At first most struggled, and with the exception of Steve Avery, they all seemed to thrive off the major-league opportunity. - Adam Lema, Sacramento, Calif. Peter Gammons: No, because a kid like Betemit needs as much time playing every day and getting four at-bats per game as possible. Sitting rusts tools. Lockhart is invaluable, because he can sit on the bench for 5-6 days, then come off and play. The Mets have a terrific veteran bench of players who can fill those roles, like Todd Pratt Darryl Hamilton and Matt Franco You want analysis of bad umpiring? Check out the "O'Neill-Leyritz Report." Q: What chances do you give Mike Greenwell to come back and play major-league baseball? Do you see Tim Naehring becoming a GM sometime in the near future? And what is happening with Peter Garrett and Midnight Oil these days? - Eric Jacques, N. Billerica, Mass.

Extractions: Kearns OK with assignment to AA By Tony Jackson, Post staff reporter SARASOTA, Fla.The Austin Kearns saga, the most recent and possibly final episode in a spring that for the Reds has been filled with controversy, was settled on Tuesday to the apparent satisfaction of all parties involved. Kearns, an outfielder and the Reds' top minor league prospect, met privately with general manager Jim Bowden upon his arrival at the team's spring training complex. Shortly thereafter, Kearns met with player development director Tim Naehring, then hit the back fields to rejoin the rest of the minor leaguers for stretching. Kearns, who was upset after Naehring told him on Sunday he would begin the year at Class AA Chattanooga rather than AAA Louisville, did not show up for work Monday. ''We just needed to get on the same page,'' Kearns said. ''It's pretty much a dead issue now. I don't have anything against the idea of playing at Chattanooga. But I kind of wasn't prepared for it. That's the thing I was upset about. Now, it's over and done with. I'll just go out and play. That's the only thing I can do.''
