And it was just as ironic that a member of the Yankees farm system wound up being the hero at McCoy Stadium, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox and deep in the heart of Red Sox Nation. Couple all that with the fact that the pro-Sox crowd was chanting for a player named "Bucky! Bucky!" in the late innings, and it was truly a surreal setting. Columbus' Andy Phillips hit a two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the International League a dramatic, 4-3 victory over the Pacific Coast League before a crowd of 11,192. Phillips, a third baseman who was hitting .327-15-46 for the Clippers, drilled a 1-0 slider from Tacoma righthander Scott Atchison over the left-center field wall for the game-winner.

Extractions: Not a Wack Pack, Jack Dave Paisley 2B or not 2B? That is the question. Second base is a key defensive position usually played by a guy who carries a real light bat. Based on last year's performance, 1998's projected starting second basemen are collectively the second-least offensive position in MLB (or the second- most offensive if you're unfortunate enough to watch the likes of Mark Lemke at the plate.) The only bunch of weaker hitters are the shortstops.

Adam Dunn is bouncing through the Reds' spring training clubhouse in Sarasota, Fla., trying to assemble teammates for a round of batting practice the day before the team's first official workout. Sean Casey volunteers, and Dunn, 22, practically bursts with youthful enthusiasm, giddy that he will be hitting outdoors instead of in a batting cage. "That's what I'm talking about," he says. Extractions: Baseball Fever National League Milwaukee Brewers PDA View Full Version : on pitching health Ravenlord 05-08-2005, 01:08 AM the Brewers seem to be well ahead in the thought process of the science of arm health...i think great things feats of health (and probable improvement) are going to be seen in many of the upper middle and top pitching prospects the Brewers have in AA and below within the next two or three years. The Brewers have been plagued by injuries to their young pitchers for more than a decade. Prospect after hard-throwing prospect has signed on the dotted line, eager to fulfill their big league dreams and anxious to one day climb the bump at County Stadium or Miller Park, but precious few have survived their apprenticeship in the organization's minor leagues. For that, the Brewers have paid a heavy toll. Without the financial resources to acquire top-notch free agent hurlers, the team's failure to safely and successfully develop young pitchers has contributed in no small way to their ongoing 12-year losing streak.

Extractions: I think one of my favorite ballpark memories was a not-so-pretty moment in Fenway. It was a season most Sox fans would like to forget because of the dreadful ending. However, a summer day game against the hated Yankees saw Billy Martin pull Reggie Jackson from right field in the middle of an inning! Apparently, this was because Martin felt Jackson made a lackadaisical effort on a play. An argument took place in dugout for all to see on the big screen. It was so wonderful to see two of the biggest names on the dreaded Yankees nearly come to blows. Michael Mahoney My dad was an avid baseball and Red Sox fan. In 1946, he took me to my first game at Fenway. I was five and immediately became addicted to my beloved Red Sox. Throughout my juvenile and teen-age years, I went to Fenway at an average of 30 games per annum. The memories are numerous. Foremost was being seated along the right field line as Teddy Ballgame homered at his last at-bat. I believe there were only about 13,000 of us there on that beautiful September afternoon in 1960. It was a thing of beauty at a place I consider to be paradise on earth. Jimmy Connors My greatest moment at Fenway Park is hard to rival, and I still have an unused "standing room only" ticket to prove it from Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. I was in the Army and stationed 40 miles from Boston at Fort Devens, Mass., and myself and a buddy literally spent the night before tickets went on sale for the World Series in sleeping bags, along with a few hundred other folks.
Extractions: Big Mo. How could you not love Big Mo when he was a Red Sox? All that power and that big body swaggering in the batters box. He was fun to watch and he was great in the Boston community. There was just money problems that sent him out of Boston. Would I like to have him now? No. Probably not even if he was completely healthy. But he will always be a favorite of mine. 2nd Base:
Extractions: all-baseball.com , part of the most valuable network , presents: Evan Brunell's analytical (and sometimes not so analytical) look at the Boston Red Sox. by Evan Brunell Fire Brand of the American League My favorite player is Tim Wakefield, which is why he was the inaugural Fire Brand of the American League I live by three mottos. The first is that no matter who you are, or what disability you have, you can put yourself out in this world and make a name for yourself. Third is that the universe is the limit, not just the sky. Ode to Pedro REWIND to 1996, the first year I became a Red Sox fan. I was ten years old, and was starting to really get into the team. Unfortunately, I became a fan the year after 1995, so I have yet to witness and experience a division title by the Red Sox. Well get there, though. I attended my first Red Sox game when I was nine (1995), but I wasnt too impressed. I told my father and mother to tell me when Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco got up to bat. When they werent, I read a book. The book wasnt even baseball related. Mo and Jose were it for me. Therefore all I remember about the 1995 season is one game with Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco. [Note: Dont get me wrong, I was a fan of the Red Sox, but I was just an average fan, and I loved to read!] 1996, I fell for the Red Sox - hard. In the span of one month, I became well-versed in the Red Sox language, in the team, and in their cursed history. Mike Stanley was still catching in 1996, and he quickly became a favorite of mine. Then you had John Valentin, Jeff Frye (I still remember the day I picked up the newspaper and was floored to hear that the incumbent starting second baseman just handed the job, had torn his ACL), Troy OLeary, Tim Naehring, Mike Greenwell, Reggie Jefferson, Bill Haselman, Darren Bragg, Roger Clemens, Tom Gordon, Tim Wakefield, Aaron Sele, Heathcliff Slocumb, Mike Stanton, Rich Garces, Jamie Moyer, Vaughn Eshelman, and of course, Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco. Looking back, I am floored how we ever finished 85-77.

Extractions: The player who has a batter up chooses a card representing the swing he will use and plays it face down. The pitcher does the same to indicate the pitch used. Now, each player draws a card. On that card there is a color bar for pitches and swings. Now, the player who pitches takes that color and looks up their pitch on a chart. The batter does the same for the swing. Find where the two columns meet. That is the result. Look that result up on another chart to indicate the result. Either the batter is out or they're on a base. All of this has to be tracked in your head, because there is no mechanism for doing it on the table. Essentially, each player plays a card, flips a card, compares their results on a chart and then looks at another chart to determine the result. This game is way too complicated.
