Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport Index of Women Career Hitting Record Other Resources A switch-hitter who threw right-handed, Murray entered professional baseball in 1973 and became a starter as an outfielder and first baseman with the AL's Baltimore Orioles in 1977, when he batted .283 with 27 home runs to win the league's rookie of the year award. That was the beginning of an amazingly productive career, unfortunately marred by charges, mostly unfounded, that he suffered from an attitude problem. After playing first base and third base in 1978, Murray settled in permanently as a first baseman the following season. He led the AL with 78 RBI and tied for the home run lead with 22 in the strike-shortened 1981 season, when he batted .294. His finest season overall was probably 1982, when he hit .316 with 32 home runs and 110 RBI. He also won the first of three consecutive Gold Glove Awards. By then, Murray had become a Baltimore fan favorite, probably second only to Cal Ripken Jr. in popularity. He was also second to Ripken in American League MVP voting in 1983, when the Orioles won their first World Series championship since 1970. Murray had a career-high 33 home runs that year, and he hit two in the fifth and final game of the World Series victory over the Phillies. But things began to turn sour in 1986, when Murray went on the disabled list for the first time with a pulled hamstring. Team owner Edward Bennet Williams publicly questioned his dedication and, after Murray's return to the lineup, the Orioles had problems winning. Murray refused to talk to the media, fans began to boo him, and after the 1988 season he asked to be traded.

Lou Gehrig was one of the most prolific RBI men of all time, and the all time leader in Grand Slams. Number 2 on the all time list is none other than Eddie Murray Eddie Murray finished his career with over 3,000 hits and 500 homers, and only Willie Mays and Hank Aaron have been able to do that as well. While baseball kept records of game winning hits, Eddie Murray was always at the top of the list. I've been a baseball fan since the late 50s and there is no doubt in my mind that the greatest clutch hitter in the last forty years is Eddie Murray. This is what a Hall of Famer looks like. Congratulations, Eddie. More submissions Posted February 11, 2003.

That much was proven yesterday. But it is ironic that Murray was unable to bask in the glow of his own success, because of the emotional welfare of his family. Murray always put family and team first, and himself a distant second. Tom Boswell

Eddie Murray was a man of few words when it came to dealing with members of the media. At times, he was labeled as a bad influence in the clubhouse by those members of the press. Those that were his teammate told a different tale Murray was a team leader. Whatever difficulties existed between Murray and the media seems to have dissipated over the years. Murray was elected to the Hall of Fame on his first try becoming only the 38th player to accomplish that feat. Murray never led the league in home runs or RBIS (he tied for the lead in the strike-shortened 1981 season). Yet, he managed to accomplish something only two other players have managed. Murray, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron are the only baseball players to ever collect 3,000 or more hits AND 500 or more home runs. Murray is the only member of that club who was a switch-hitter. In his 22-year career, he hit .287 with 504 HRs and 1,917 RBIs. He played for the Orioles, Indians, Dodgers, Mets and Angels. He appeared in 8 All-Star games and hit 19 grand slams in his career second all-time to Lou Gehrig's 23.
