Guys like Mike Benjamin and Pat Meares have ended up with money out of proportion to their talent simply because they have a history of showing up and putting on a Pirate uniform. You can add Brian Meadows to that list (along with the recently-signed Abraham Nunez. Posted on Dec 4, 2003 at 9:09 AM Comments Actually, Meares and Benjamin were not Pirates yet when Cam Bonifay graced them with big money. The Pirates just have a history of overspending for mediocre players. Posted by: Shawn Weaver at December 4, 2003 11:45 AM You're right. So it isn't even a sense of misguided loyalty that causes the Pirates to overpay these guys! Posted by: Christian at December 5, 2003 08:27 AM

Extractions: jstevenson@nwherald.com Biner took it upon himself to be that someone. The Wolves' first baseman ripped a 350-foot, two-run home run in the sixth inning Friday, lifting Prairie Ridge past Rolling Meadows, 3-2, in their non-conference baseball game. Biner's shot preserved another dominant performance from left-hander Rick Zagone (3-0), who allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out seven. "Our pitchers have picked up our hitters so far," Biner said. "Our goal is to up our offense. It felt good to give our pitchers a break." Zagone, who no-hit Granite City, 3-1, on Monday, stretched his string to 11 hitless innings against Rolling Meadows. The Mustangs (3-2) got two runs in the fifth when Pat McDonald doubled for their first hit, and Keil Hansen lined a single down the right-field line. Prairie Ridge right fielder Mike Wyatt misplayed the ball, allowing Hansen to reach third. Hansen then scored on a ground ball for a 2-1 lead. Prairie Ridge (4-2) got a leadoff single from Mike Obermeier in the bottom of the sixth. Zagone sensed Biner, who already had two hits, was going to come through.

Sophomore Jordan Steele (2-2) picked up the loss in the second game This past weekend proved to be exciting for the Charger baseball program as they picked up three key wins against Gulf-South Conference rival Lincoln Memorial University . The Charger's needed this win to make up ground in the GSC East Division standings. UAH achieved the victories in three close contests against LMU-resulting in a pair of 5-4 wins on Saturday and an eleven inning 10-9 win on Sunday afternoon
