Extractions: By Kerry Jackson When he appeared as the first person on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1954, slugger Eddie Mathews was shown taking what baseball legend Ty Cobb called one of the three or four perfect swings he'd seen. It was a skill Mathews acquired early in life through endless hours of practice. "My mother used to pitch to me, and my father would shag balls," he said when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978. "If I hit one up the middle, close to my mother, I'd have some extra chores to do." Being forced to avoid hitting his mother helped the left-handed swinging Mathews develop into a pull hitter who routinely drove the ball to right field. Mathews (1931-2001), the seventh major league to hit 500 home runs, recorded 512 for his career. Until Mike Schmidt broke the record, Mathews held the major league mark for the most home runs by a third baseman. He also drove in 1,453 runs and hit .271 for his career. He played in three World Series, his team winning the first (1957, with the Milwaukee Braves) and the last (1968, with the Detroit Tigers).

Extractions: The baseball career of Eddie Mathews Eddie Mathews was one of the best power hitting third basemen to ever play the game. He was recognized for his efforts with his election to the Hall of Fame in 1978. If Hank Aaron were in his prime today, the salary demands of the sport would prevent him from ever playing on the same team with another slugger. Fortunately for Aaron, he played in the days when teams could afford more than one superstar. And fortunately for Aaron, he was able to play with Eddie Mathews. Unlike many players today, Eddie Mathews took less money to play in a city that offered him the best opportunity. While the Brooklyn Dodgers offered him a $10,000 contract, Mathews chose to play for the Boston Braves for $6,000. In his first minor league season in 1949, Mathews batted .363 with 17 homers. He upped that home run total to 32 one year later, and eventually (in 1952) was promoted to the big league club. Mathews struggled a bit his first season, leading the National League in strikeouts, though he continued to show power with 25 homeruns. In 1953, the year the Braves moved to Milwaukee, Mathews led the league with 47 homers. Over the next six seasons, he continued to scorch the ball, and won a World Series along the way. From 1954 - 1957, Mathews had at least 37 homers and 95 RBI each season. In the world championship season of 1957, he hit 32 dingers and 94 RBI to go along with a .292 average. The next two seasons he totaled 77 homeruns

Extractions: I have always been a fan of consistent players. Sure it's thrilling when a player like Greg Vaughn or Gary Sheffield has a break-out season, but there's something to be said for a player you can count on, year-in and year-out, to perform at a predictable level. This lets a team's fans (as well as its GM) worry about other things when thinking about the upcoming season. So who have been our most (and least) consistent players? Well, one way to determine this would be to pick some measurement (like batting average or ERA) and see how much it changes from year to year. My favorite offensive measurement that's easy to calculate is OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) so let's start with that. I decided to use a 100 plate appearance per season minimum because (at least initially) I wanted to concentrate on performance rather than opportunity. I also figured it might bring to the foreground players often overlooked. So what player had the most consistent back-to-back seasons? Rusty Staub, from 1975 to 1976. Here are his stats:
