Extractions: Player Profile: Eddie Mathews Name: Edwin Lee "Eddie" Mathews Third baseman; Left-handed batter Lived: Career span: Hall of Fame? Yes (1978) Primary team: Braves (1952-1966) Best Year: 1953 - .302, 47 HR, 135 RBI Rank on Greatest Players list Player notes : Mathews was one of the all-time great home run hitting third basemen. He combined with teammate Henry Aaron to hit 863 home runs, the all-time record for a pair of teammates. He led the league in homers twice, and hit over 40 four different seasons. Although he never won an MVP award, he finished second in the voting twice, and in the top 10 four times. Until Mike Schmidt came along, he probably ranked as the greatest third basemen in history. Just a great, great player. The Baseball Index is also an ongoing project of the Bibliography Committee of The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) to catalog all books, pamphlets, magazine and feature newspaper articles, recordings, musical scores, dissertations, films and television programs - in other words, virtually everything - about baseball. Currently, we have cataloged over 155,000 items and are adding over 5,000 new records each quarter. We need volunteers to help us catalog baseball books and magazine articles. We have carefully devised a cataloging manual along with subject terms to do just that. Many volunteers have already done much work for us, but we will need more. There are many ways you can help us.

Free $10,000 NFL Football Contest MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Eddie Mathews On the evening of his high school graduation, Mathews signed his big-league contract with the Braves, while he was wearing his tuxedo for the dance. Since rules were strict about signing a player prior to his graduation, the parties had to wait until midnight for Eddie to put pen to paper. Johnny Moore, the former outfielder, went to Mathews graduation dance and hauled the youngster out so he could officially become a major leaguer. Unlike Aaron, who was known for his line-drive homers, Mathews was famous for tape-measure blasts. His homers flew high and deep. Men who had seen Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and Ralph Kiner blast the longball, ranked Mathews right up there for distance.
