Extractions: Baseball Fever National League Atlanta Braves PDA View Full Version : Javy Lopez yellowdog 06-08-2003, 01:16 PM I may be opinionated, but if I'm wrong about something, I try to be the first person to admit it. And I was dead wrong about Javy Lopez. After he got off to another slow start, I thought it was time to go ahead and start playing Johnny Estrada and grooming him for the future. And that giving Lopez a player's option this year for seven million was one of the worst moves Scuerholz had ever made. I was sure this would be his last year in Atlanta, but now it looks like they may need to try to re-sign him. So he's really proven me wrong, and I couldn't be happier about it! 06-08-2003, 01:29 PM I felt the same way, but Javy has definately changed my mind, too. With the way he's playing now, I don't think there's a better catcher anywhere in the game. If he keeps it up, he's going to have a monster year. Atlanta Braves Freak 06-08-2003, 02:10 PM

Extractions: Unlike the Tejada signing, I have mixed feelings about this one. Lopez was one of two choices; Pudge Rodriguez being the other. Javy is not nearly the defensive catcher Ivan is (obviously), plus, he's been a tad more injury prone and less consistent at the plate when healthy. But, he has more power, and came cheaper... if things turn out for the worse, there's always the DH spot, which for a guy like Lopez is a great luxury for the O's.

Extractions: By Louis Berney Javy Lopez has a hobby. He likes to fly remote control airplanes. Not the little ones that you sometimes see kids playing with in parks, but planes that have wing spans as wide as 10 feet. The kind that you need a license to operate from the ground. Ah, last year. For Javy Lopez, 2003 was a glorious year, a season that any baseball player (save, perhaps, Barry Bonds) would want to prolong for the rest of his playing days. The Puerto Rican native always had been a dangerous big league hitter. For his career, coming into 2004, he had a .287 average with 214 home runs and 694 at-bats. But never before had he put together as impressive a season as he did in 2003. What sparked Lopez to such heights? The cynics will point at that it was a free-agent year for Lopez, and ballplayers often put up sparkling numbers in their free-agent years. But the catcher himself has more palpable explanations for his career year: He was embarrassed by his 2002 season, and worked hard to make everyone forget it. And he found a stance that seemed to suit him perfectly, after switching stances regularly in previous years. And to be that better player, Lopez also knew that he would have to work hard physically. He spent the winter adding a speed training regimen to his regular weight-lifting workouts. He emphasized cardiovascular exercises to improve his speed and his flexibility, as well as his overall strength.
Extractions: BALTIMORE - Orioles catcher Javy Lopez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and is expected to miss at least six weeks because of a broken bone in his right hand. Lopez fractured the fifth metacarpal bone when struck by a foul tip in Tuesday's game against Seattle. He will have a metal plate and screws inserted into his hand by Dr. Mark Deitch during surgery Thursday. "It's going to be at least six weeks before I start doing some activities," said Lopez, who was hitting .278 with seven homers and 22 RBIs. Richie Bancels, the Orioles' head trainer, said Lopez opted for surgery over allowing the injury to heal without it because he will be able to assume baseball activities three weeks earlier. "The advantage is putting the plate in - to allow better, quicker healing and so he can do more sooner," Bancels said. Lopez, who wore a fiberglass splint Wednesday, said he will be able to work on conditioning while recovering and will begin motion exercises and therapy in three weeks. In six weeks, he will be able to resume throwing and hitting.

Extractions: Lopez feasts on low fastballs from the middle of the plate on in, and he isn't shy about jumping on the first pitch. He flirted with the .300 mark because he has learned to lay off breaking balls in the dirt. And while he always has hit the ball to all fields, he has started to hit with power to the opposite field late in the count. Lopez' numbers show an incredible balance against lefthanders and righthanders, as well as at home and on the road. His batting average, however, was nearly 40 points better last year when he hit sixth instead of fifth.

Email Us Javy Lopez recently signed a three-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, thus ending his 12-year career as an Atlanta Brave. For a player who has contributed so much to the success of this team for the past decade, I offer this tribute. This is quite long, but I hope youll take the time to read it. Take a few breaks if you must. Javier Torres Lopez was born on November 5, 1970 in the town of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Growing up in a baseball-crazed environment, he didnt begin catching until he was 15 years old. Prior to that, he was a pitcher, shortstop, and outfielder. He attended high school at Academia Cristo Rey in Urb La Ramble (near Ponce, Puerto Rico) where he played baseball, track, and volleyball. He was named Ponce's Athlete-of-the-Year from 1984-87. On November 6, 1987, one day after his 17th birthday, he was signed as an undrafted free agent to a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves. He spent his first year of professional baseball in 1988 catching for the Gulf Coast Braves, where he struggled against better pitching, batting only .191 in 94 at-bats. He spent the entire 1989 season in Pulaski of the Appalachian league. One year of added physical maturity did some good, as he increased his batting average to .261, with an increase in power numbers (12 of his 40 hits for extra bases, including 3 homers). He jumped to Burlington of the Midwest league in 1990, where the seasons are twice as long as in the Appalachian league. He was able to maintain his performance of the previous year over this extended stretch, batting .265 with 11 homeruns in 422 at-bats. He was able to continue his development as a player as he moved up to Durham of the Carolina league. He was among the team leaders in nearly every major offensive category and played in the Carolina League All-Star game.
