Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Baseball SPORTS LOG October 13, 2004 Barry Larkin 's stellar 19-year career with his hometown team ended yesterday with a one-sided phone call. The Cincinnati Reds informed their captain they aren't interested in keeping him around for another season. The 40-year-old shortstop was at his home in Orlando, Fla., when general manager Dan O'Brien and manager Dave Miley a former teammate called with the decision. "It wasn't pleasant," Larkin said. "But it is what it is. It's definitely disappointing. I have decisions to make." Larkin's 19 seasons with one team was the longest current streak in the majors. He had hoped for a 20th and was willing to discuss returning in a utility role, but the Reds ruled it out . . . Barry Bonds underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to be at full strength when the San Francisco Giants open spring training in February. The slugger told the team he first felt pain Oct. 4, the day after the season ended, and didn't want the injury to affect his offseason training . . . The Cleveland Indians declined to pick up Omar Vizquel 's $5 million contract option for next season, making him eligible to become a free agent when the World Series ends. "This step is a mere formality and does not impact the process in re-signing Omar," Indians general manager

Extractions: Main One of baseball's most quiet, dignified players is bringing his career to a close after his 19th season. Shortstop Barry Larkin, a 12-time All-Star who spent his entire 19-year career with the Cincinnati Reds, has retired and joined the Washington Nationals in their front office as a special assistant. "I just felt it was time," Larkin said when reached Sunday at his home in Orlando, Fla. "I had some opportunities with other teams to play, but I didn't feel that I could make the commitment as a player with another team." The Reds, his hometown team, had rejected his overtures to return for a 20th season, deciding to turn the position over to younger players. When you're thinking about great players during the last 25 years, Barry Larkin often doesn't jump out at you, due almost entirely to his graceful personality and lack of showmanship. Perhaps most notable is that Larkin was devoted to his hometown Reds throughout his whole pro career, surviving through the volatile Lou Piniella years, the Marge Schott scandals, and more than his share of losing seasons. Barry Larkin was rock solid, and true baseball fans immediately recognize that. Posted by Ryne McClaren at 03:50 PM Permalink Weblogs

"He's going to dress and work out with the players because I believe that his leadership qualities can help this team," GM Jim Bowden said. "He going to take ground balls and hit in the cage. People are going to ask if he's coming back and the answer to that is no."
Relentless Grace: Great Quote About Barry Larkin Great quote about barry larkin from baseball genius Bill James, from a Cincinnati Enquirer article. As long as I ve been a baseball fan, there have been http://www.brianbaute.com/archives/2004/06/great_quote_abo.php
Extractions: Main Great quote about Barry Larkin from baseball genius Bill James, from a Cincinnati Enquirer article "As long as I've been a baseball fan, there have been 40-year-old pitchers who were very effective. Warren Spahn was 23-7 when he was 42. (Steve) Carlton was great when he was 40. There have been others who were very good in their 40s. But I don't know if I've ever seen a 40-year-old shortstop playing like he is." James has called Larkin "one of the 10 most complete players of all time." Unfortunately I don't think Barry has a strong chance at the Hall of Fame, but I think he should be there. He was overshadowed by the terribly overrated Ozzie Smith for much of his career and now is overshadowed by the power numbers of ARod, Jeter, and Nomar. But Larkin is a league MVP (1995), World Champion (1990), 11-time All-Star, 3-time Gold Glove (1994, 1995, 1996 - and he should have gotten it several times earlier in his career but Ozzie got it well after his prime), lifetime .815 OPS, the first 30/30 shortstop. Just like Dave Concepcion is overshadowed by the Big Red Machine and probably won't make the Hall, though, I think Barry will be left on the outside looking in. The big strikes against Barry are his lack of consistent greatness (only 2 top-10 MVP finishes) and his lack of media exposure (played his whole career in a small market with only 2 career playoff appearances). He's hit some big milestones (2000 hits, 1000 runs, 400 doubles) but is just shy of others (a .300 career batting average, 200 HRs, 1000 RBIs, 400 stolen bases, 1000 walks would look much better on paper than his actual .295/193/935/379/918).

Extractions: After hitting .289 and making his 12th All-Star team in 2004, Larkin will leave the Reds with a 1995 NL MVP Award, three Gold Glove awards and a 1990 World Series ring to go along with his career .295 batting average, 198 home runs and 960 RBIs. He's also the only shortstop in Major League history to accumulate over 2,200 hits, 190 home runs and 370 steals. "Dave [Miley] and I had to make a most difficult telephone call today to Barry Larkin," said O'Brien. "In that conversation we shared with him that as a result of our organizational meetings, where we had an opportunity to talk with scouts at length as well as our coaching staff, that there was a clear-cut consensus that we needed to give Felipe Lopez and Anderson Machado an opportunity to play in Cincinnati in the '05 season. As a result, we explained to Barry that there would not be a contract forthcoming for him. "It's consistent with our organizational direction of trying to give younger players an opportunity to play. For 19 years Barry Larkin has been an outstanding player and representative for the organization. For many of you who have seen him on a day-in, day-out basis, it's been a pleasure to see him play the position at such an exceptional level. We thank Barry for all of his contributions to this organization and for all that he's meant to it."

Extractions: After 19 seasons and 2,180 games in the big leagues, Barry Larkin called it quits earlier this month, stepping off the field and into the front office, where he will be a special assistant to former Cincinnati GM Jim Bowden and the Washington Nationals. Though Larkin was a 12-time All-Star shortstop and the 1995 National League MVP, he has always struck me as an underappreciated player and the lack of attention his retirement got was disappointing, but not surprising.
