Extractions: Pitchers, catchers and Ken Griffey reported to the Reds spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida. Soon, the other position players will follow. But, for the first time in two decades...#11 wonât be out there. #11....Barry Larkin....has officially retired. Barry Larkin is probably the greatest Cincinnati Reds player since the Big Red Machine fell apart after the 70s [Eric Davis may be the best talent since then]. Larkin didnât really throw up those ungodly numbers that Alex Rodriguez or Nomar Garciaparra put up....but he was solid at the plate, on the basepaths and with the glove. He was excellent in the clubhouse....becoming the Reds first captain since David Concepcion [the guy Larkin replaced]. He is a Cincinnati native. Raised in Cincy and played for his hometown team for 19 seasons....12 of those seasons he was an All Star. Winning an MVP award and a World Series ring along the way. Nine Silver Sluggers and three Gold Gloves. Heâs played more seasons for the Reds than anyone.

As backup catcher Gary Bennett jogged up and down the left field line, nearly everyone in the Washington Nationals' front office tried to sneak in a final day away from the park before the grind of spring training begins Tuesday, when pitchers and catchers report. But what happened in the ensuing hours was an indication of how Bowden and therefore, the Nationals could work as the team builds toward Washington's first season with baseball since 1971. Just after noon, the Nationals swapped outfield prospects with the Chicago White Sox, giving up 23-year-old Jerry Owens for Alex Escobar, 26, who was once the top prospect in the New York Mets' system. And three hours later, they hired former Cincinnati shortstop Barry Larkin whom Bowden had courted as a player to be a special assistant to the general manager, with a wide variety of scouting and developmental responsibilities.

"Guillen is Guillen." That was a reference to an equipment-throwing tirade by the volatile outfielder after being tossed in the top of the fifth for arguing balls and strikes. While it was an embarrassment, it wasn't a distraction: later in the inning Preston Wilson and Vinny Castilla broke a 3-3 tie with back to back home runs, powering the Nats to a 6-3 win over the Mets Important milestone #1: the win was the 75th this season for the Nats, matching the season totals that several bloggers, myself included

Extractions: ZOOM MILWAUKEE Barry Larkin has a body like you see on the cover of those men's fitness magazines. Washboard abs. Sculptured chest. Lean, muscular limbs. He feels good. That's good, because Larkin is about to enter uncharted territory. He turns 37 on April 28. Thirty-seven is young if you're trying to buy life insurance or climb the corporate ladder. But if you're a major-league shortstop, it's old, bordering on ancient. Larkin is the oldest starting shortstop in baseball and one of only seven over 30. The average age of the National League shortstops? Twenty-five. A look at Hall of Fame shortstops and future Hall of Famers shows how they drop off in production in their late 30s. Phil Rizzuto hit .271 at 36 and .195 at 37. Luis Aparicio hit .313 at 36 and .232 at 37. Pee Wee Reese hit .308 at 36 and .257 at 38. Arky Vaughn retired at 36, Lou Boudreau at 35. Ernie Banks moved from shortstop to first base at 30. Cal Ripken went from short to third at 37. Robin Young moved to center field before he turned 30.

Extractions: Main January 28, 2005 Barry Bye-Bye It looks like Barry Larkin is about to retire . Larkin's doing a number of non-baseball activities this winter: None of those pursuits, you might notice, have anything to do with playing shortstop in the major leagues. Does this mean Larkin's playing career is officially over? He won't say those words directly, but it doesn't take much reading between the lines to determine the answer to that question. "I'm doing what I want to do," Larkin said over the telephone from Florida. "I have a lot of oars in the water and there's a lot of things that I'm doing. One thing I'm not doing is sitting around at home worrying about baseball or about anything, for that matter." Larkin has not had a great season this decade. Although it appears that some teams would like to employee him, he's not comfortable playing anywhere but Cincinnati: But Larkin still expressed a desire to play shortstop every day for someone and vowed to explore his options. As it turned out, most of the discussions he had about playing somewhere other than his hometown were internal. "I really didn't know where I was on that," he said. "I didn't press the issue, and I kind of waited to see if it would go one way or the other. I never woke up and said OK, I can do it, I can go play for another team and feel good about it, representing another organization.

Larkin, Edgar, and McGriff all eligible in the same year. Should be among the most interesting Hall of Fame votes in a while. The amount of playing time he missed due to various nagging injuries hurts his career totals.
