I actually saw a World Series, and the way the economics of baseball is, I'm not sure I'll ever see one again, but I keep coming back for more. The trade will save the Pirates approximately $15 million. View: Kendall's fantasy value should increase with the trade to Oakland. For one he joins a better offensive club. He doesn't have much power so his homer total won't be hurt with the move to a tougher hitters park. His RBI total should increase as he'll have more opportunities to drive in runs as he hit leadoff for most of last year with the pitcher hitting in front of him. His stolen bases could drop to the mid-single digits as Billy Beane doesn't value stolen bases very highly - only one Oakland player stole more than 8 bases last season. Move Kendall up slightly on your draft day cheat sheets for next year.

Pittsburgh also will kick in money toward Kendall's 2007 salary, believed to be in the neighborhood of $5 million. Pittsburgh's motivation for the deal was purely financial. As a small-market club, they have been choked by Kendall's six-year, $60 million contract almost since former GM Cam Bonifay signed him to it in November 2000. Kendall will make $10 million in 2005, $11 million in 2006 and $13 million in 2007. Redman has two years and $9.2 million remaining on a three-year, $11.45 million contract he signed last offseason. Rhodes, who also agreed to a three-year deal (worth $9.2 million) before the 2004 season, has $6.2 million remaining on his pact. Redman, 30, won a career-high 14 games for the World Series champion Marlins in 2003, but they

Extractions: This is really a division where one team dominates, and everyone else is playing for second place. The Houston Astros looked absolutely dead in the water early on. The team was struggling to score runs, and there was talk of Roger Clemens being traded back to the Yankees. However, they have turned things around in a big way. Houston currently sits six games over .500 and right in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. The Astros owe a large portion of credit to their pitching. Roger Clemens has defied the odds and is having another Cy Young caliber season. Roy Oswalt gives the team an excellent second starter, and Andy Pettitte has recovered from injuries last season to pitch excellent ball recently. The Yankees sure wish they hadn't let Pettitte go to Houston so that they could trade for Kevin Brown now. Brad Lidge is one of the top closers in the game for when the team has a lead. The team's pitching makes them very dangerous. They still could use another bat, but this is shaping up to become another Houston run from out of the race to the postseason.
Salon People | Jason Kendall's Worst Fourth Of July jason kendall s worst Fourth of July He s one of nature s wonders A One of the problems of baseball today is that ballplayers hang on forever, http://www.salon.com/people/log/1999/07/06/kendall/
Extractions: By Henry Louis Taylor July 6, 1999 T here it was, shown over and over on the television sports shows on July 4. Jason Kendall, the brilliant young catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, runs down the first base line, hits first base with the edge of his right foot and, after an awkward series of half-steps, plunges to the ground. The announcers say that a close-up shot is too horrible to see: Kendall's ankle shattered, a piece of bone piercing the skin and sock. The tape shows the first baseman turning away, unable to look, and Kendall, having gone into shock, carried away on a stretcher, his teammates hiding their faces. "One of the worst things I've ever seen," said his manager, Gene Lamont. At 25, Kendall was one of nature's wonders a catcher who could run. That's pretty common in Little League or college ball, but for a guy with leadoff speed to make it all the way to the major leagues as a catcher is extremely rare. Stealing bases, playing like a matador behind the plate, hitting line drives, Kendall looked like one of those special players who redefine a position and expand the game's possibilities. We often see the old player give up the game at the end of a long career. One of the problems of baseball today is that ballplayers hang on forever, many of them mediocre guys able through sheer longevity to reach once-rare milestones like 3,000 hits, 500 home runs or 300 victories.

Dodger Thoughts: Is Jason Kendall Worth $10M A Year? The quality of the 2004 season of jason kendall, quite frankly, kendall was the 46thmost valuable position player in baseball last season, according to http://www.all-baseball.com/dodgerthoughts/archives/016500.html
Extractions: all-baseball.com , part of the most valuable network , presents: Jon Weisman's outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers and baseball. by Jon Weisman The quality of the 2004 season of Jason Kendall , quite frankly, takes me by surprise. Kendall, acquired by Oakland from Pittsburgh last week, was the fourth-most valuable catcher in baseball last season according to VORP on Baseball Prospectus , behind Ivan Rodriguez, Javy Lopez and Jorge Posada. He also had the most Win Shares of any catcher. He had the second-highest on-base percentage of any catcher. That being said, should you be impressed? Winning a Most Valuable Catcher award is a lot like winning Best Smelling Pig. The distinction is no guarantee of greatness. Catcher is the least productive offensive position chasing rainbows Kendall was the 46th-most valuable position player in baseball last season, according to Baseball Prospectus , and in the top 30 in Win Shares. Given that there are 30 major league baseball teams, this positions Kendall to be the best or second-best position player on an average major league team, which is a more meaningful credential to have.
The Stats Geek: By Numbers Alone, Kendall Is In Elite Group Because jason kendall, 30, is all those things and yet can never come close to earning the he will become only the second catcher in baseball history, http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04331/417573.stm
Extractions: The Pirates just traded the best full-time catcher in the National League, the best in team history, and easily one of the 20 or 30 best in the history of the game. Yet, if other moves are made correctly, it's the right thing to do. Because Jason Kendall, 30, is all those things and yet can never come close to earning the $34 million remaining on the last three years of his contract. The Pirates gave Kendall that monstrous money only after his career peaked. His best years are behind him. How well the team spends the money they've saved is the big question now. That savings is reportedly $15 million. Though no one ever worked harder than Kendall to earn his pay, his contract, which many fans couldn't see past, left him in the unique position of being both overpaid and underrated. In the age of "SportsCenter," Kendall's game is hardly noticed. He hasn't the power to make the highlight reels, and the speed that made him the only catcher in baseball history to steal 20 bases three times has disappeared. But Kendall has caught at least 140 games in six of his first nine seasons. If he catches 140 games again in 2005, he will become only the second catcher in baseball history, along with Hall of Famer Gary Carter, to do that seven times.
Extractions: Should the Pirates trade the best catcher in the National League? Jason Kendall just hit over .300 for the sixth time in nine seasons. He finished in the top 10 in batting average and hits for the second year in a row. Apart from some guy named Ichiro, he led every leadoff hitter in on-base average. (.407 to Suzuki's .417). Kendall's .306 career batting average is 13th among active players, but he will make $10 million next year, $11 million in 2006 and $13 million in 2007. He is 30 and has caught more games in less time than almost any catcher in history. If the Pirates are to have the scratch to pay the likes of Jason Bay, Oliver Perez and Jack Wilson in a few years, now is a good time to shop Kendall. He has a no-trade clause, but the (gag, wheeze) Cubs could use a leadoff hitter and the Dodgers could use a catcher. J.R. House, a catcher who can play first base, hit .290 with a .342 on-base average and .508 slugging at Class AAA Nashville. House is out of minor-league options. Humberto Cota also had an intriguing year as Kendall's backup, hitting only .227 but slamming five home runs in 66 at-bats. To sell "The Kid" in a game filled with aging catchers, begin with his unique approach to the 0-0 count. Kendall went to the plate 657 times and put the first pitch in play four times, going 1 for 4. But he reached base more often than not because he was hit by three pitches.
