Los Angeles got rid of first baseman Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek, while Chicago dumped Todd Hundley. The Dodgers also received outfielder Chad Hermansen and paid $2 million to help balance the deal financially. Karros, who waived his no-trade rights, is due $8 million in 2003 and will vest a $9 million club option for 2004 should he get 500 plate appearances next year. Grudzielanek was due to make $5.5 million in 2003 before agreeing to defer some of that money, and the Cubs have a $6 million option on him for 2004. Hundley has two years and $12.5 million remaining on a four-year, $23.5 million contract that has been one of the worst free-agent signings ever. Karros, 35, is coming off his worst offensive season since he won the National League rookie of the year in 1992. He hit .271 with a career-low 13 home runs and 73 RBI in 142 games in 2002, posting a meager .722 on-base plus slugging percentage. After eclipsing 30 homers five times in six seasons, he has hit a total of just 28 in 2001-02. Already a liability as a runner and defender, Karros has little value unless he hits for power. He also fell out of favor in the Dodgers clubhouse and never established himself as a veteran leader despite his tenure. In 1,601 career games, Karros, the franchise's Los Angeles career home run leader, has hit .268-270-976.

Athletics Nation :: Curse Of The Erics First, there was a turkey named eric Fox. He hit a big HR off a mistake by JeffRearden mr. eric karros. If I weren t playing baseball, I d be. http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2005/5/10/103115/468
Extractions: First, there was a turkey named Eric Fox. He hit a big HR off a mistake by Jeff Rearden (splitter that didn't sink and went right down the pipe) and later abrogated any claim to fame, save infamy, for running home on a grounder directly in front of him in the playoffs vs Toronto. He was easily thrown out in what turned out to be a pivotal play in that series and I don't believe he was ever to again appear in a MLB baseball gamecertainly not with the A's. Then there is Eric Bumblin Byrnesy. ByrnesBrain, although possessed of great speed, is actually a worse defensive OF than Ben Grieve, as at least Grieve took the right route to fly balls he could reach and hit the cutoff mansomething you never witness in Byrnes' Butcher Shop. And with the A's, Grieve could hitByrnesBrain can't hit righties to save his life (or his career). Worst of all, his failure to touch homeplate was a braincramp on a par with the Tejada's failure to run home vs Boston. BB, get rid of this Bumhis ADD addled brain obstructs any baseball sensibilities. And then there is Eric Chavez. Now I like Chavvy and believe he will come out of his funk and continue to put up better offensive numbers than the overrated Tejada (who went for the big bucks and will never again reach the playoffs and their pressurethe O's hot start has been exhibited by plenty of other lousy teams over a season's first month).

Extractions: This is from Baseball Prospectus: "The big news over the weekend was the A's sending Mark Mulder the Cardinals, the second time in three days that they'd traded one of their "Big Three" to an NL contender. At first, I though the A's made a poor deal, but I think that was largely a reflection of my not liking the trade of Tim Hudson to Atlanta. Once I evaluated the second deal on its merits, though, I not only found myself coming around on it, but beginning to see the transaction as part of a pattern that reflects a reversal by the A's. Mulder brought back right-handers Dan Haren and Kiko Calero and catching prospect Daric Barton. Barton has hit in the low minors, but may not be a catcher by the time he reaches Triple-A, much less the majors. He could end up as anything at this point, so consider just the pitchers for now. I'm not convinced that in 2005, Mark Mulder is going to be better than Dan Haren. Forget money. I think the indicators for the two pitchers are going in opposite directions, and with Mulder's health an open question, and his brutal second half fresh in memory, it's not hard for me to see Haren being more productive next year. He had better peripherals than Mulder, albeit in many fewer innings, he has fewer health questions and a strong skill set. The Cardinals paid the price for the name, and for the label of "#1 starter." A year ago, I wrote that the A's should have traded Barry Zito instead of Ted Lilly because the key in trading is to swap a player whose perceived value is greater than their actual value. That's exactly what they've done here; Mulder has win totals and innings and a reputation and a contract, but the gap between that and what he's actually worth right now is fairly large.

Baseball Toaster : Dodger Thoughts : Eric Karros: Sparring Partner baseball Toaster is a new site running on some experimental software called And for better or worse, eric karros will not be part of the solution. http://dodgerthoughts.baseballtoaster.com/archives/11054.html
Extractions: Log in Register Help Eric Karros: Sparring Partner by Jon Weisman I woke up this morning realizing that overnight I had dreamed that Eric Karros had hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 17th inning at Wrigley Field to give the Cubs a victory over the Dodgers. I had been thinking about writing about Karros 2003, and decided this would be the day. Then I got the Times and saw that Ross Newhan had beaten me to the punch . Man, I hate getting scooped. But moving forward ... First of all, what does this dream represent? Feelings of anxiety, certainly. Fear of betrayal? Fear of having misjudged? Too much preoccupation with the Dodgers? Latent wish-fulfillment based on the idea that I would want all ex-Dodgers, no matter who they were, to succeed? It is true that, long, long ago, I was a Karros fan. Seems hard to believe now - Grandma Sue, who teases me about my antipathy for Karros every time we go to a game - would not dream it possible. But in May 1992, as the Dodgers' fortunes and my own simultaneously spiraled downward, Karros hit a pinch-hit, three-run, bottom-of-the-ninth home run to beat the Pirates . Karros gave me a big lift that night - I even thought about writing him a letter to thank him. I didn't follow through, but clearly, consciously if not unconsciously as well, that homer has stuck with me.
