It probably told the story of the Kansas City Royals' season too, but we all know that story too well already. The Twins story, though, is something else. They go against every trend going in baseball these days. They have far and away the lowest payroll in baseball, millions and millions of dollars behind even the other small-market teams. They don't have a single guy on the team on pace to hit more than 25 home runs. They play in a dome that is absolutely horrendous and has been for years, and the city doesn't care enough to build a new ballpark (it has been many, many years since Dan Quisenberry saw this place and said, "I never thought there was a good use for nuclear weapons, but this might be one."). And the Twins are in first place. Still. This is no joke anymore. It's August. The Twins whose exotic slogan is "Get to know 'em" are going out there every day and playing old-fashioned, pitching-and-defense, move-the-runner, take-the-extra-base, don't-walk-anybody baseball. They are in first place, all alone, and the people who are waiting for them to drop out, well, keep waiting.

The Rake Today: Warning Track Power It s not really a surprise to me, but jacque jones has quietly become a better But in my mind it s a great, great thing that jacque jones is finally http://www.rakemag.com/today/warningtrack/archive/2005/04/maybe_this_year.aspx
Extractions: It's not really a surprise to me, but Jacque Jones has quietly become a better player certainly a better hitter, and I'd argue a better all-around player than Torii Hunter. Jones is as competitive and driven as Hunter is easy going, and he works as hard as anybody on the team to get better. He can be moody and defensive in the clubhouse, but his moods are driven as much by team failure as personal frustration, and he can also be one of the most thoughtful and engaging guys in the game. In a clubhouse full of relatively mellow and gregarious characters, his passion for baseball and his determination to play hurt and be a better all-around player stick out like a sore thumb, and right now this team could use a lot more of his fiery personality. I wrote those words on May 28th of last season, and Jones immediately proceeded to make me look like a complete idiot. I'm accustomed to looking like a complete idiot, but I was nonetheless disappointed in the extended swoon that ruined what was at the time looking like a breakout year for Jones.

Tuesday, February 01, 2005 For many Twins fans, winter is simply a reality. Here in the Upper Midwest, many of us not particularly enjoy winter, but we accept it and get through the cold weather and snow just fine (even when it does overstay its welcome). For me, one of the worst aspects of the longest of our two seasons (the other one being, obviously, roadh construction) is the lack of baseball. Sure, things arenât so bad in November and December, what with the Hot Stove League and all, but by the time January rolls around, I start to go a little stir crazy. That is why this past weekend could not have come soon enough. I dedicated my entire Saturday to my favorite pastime, and since I have this forum available to me, I thought Iâd share with you a few of the more interesting points from my day. I donât think Iâll get through it all tonight, so this might be a two-part post. However, the best stuff definitely came Saturday morning.
