We've been entertained this season by the surprising feats of players like Brian Roberts, Jon Garland, and Derrek Lee. But the first half is over and fantasy players can't rest on their laurels. With that in mind, we'll take a look at the week ahead and give you the information you'll need to start the second half off on the right foot. First, let's take a look at the intriguing storylines of July 18-24. There are few things more helpful to an owner in a weekly transaction league than getting eight games out of a player. Well, hold on to your hats, because there are four teams with such schedules this period. The Tigers and Twins will play an octet in the American League while the Pirates and Astros are scheduled to do the same in the Senior Circuit. Those extra games will result in some additional stats from guys like Dmitri Young, Daryle Ward, Willy Taveras and Jacque Jones. If these guys are borderline starters for you, don't hesitate to take advantage of their hectic week and include them in your lineup.

Their OPS was slightly higher because of the increased OBP, but BA, SLG, etc was down. The following year, the walk rate stayed the same but the rest of the stats fell off a cliff. OBP last four years: .335, .341, .333, .315. Jones hasn't become more patient, he just blipped down in 2003. Overall, he's got no plate discipline and shouldn't be in the lineup everyday. The one thing I still don't understand is why Jacque Jones threw the ball to the cut-off man and not through to home on Matsui's line drive. My interpretation is that he didn't expect Jeter to run and that's why the ball went to LeCroy. He got it in quickly but without conviction. Other people I've spoken with today said LeCroy cut it off on his own because the throw was off line. It looked like a brain freeze on Jones' part. What was your take?

Given that I live in Boston, this man was a Red Sox fan, but Yankees fans could have used all three remedies in the twelve innings it took to even up things with the Twins last night. In the afternoon before Game Two of the ALDS, a man threw himself onto the tracks at the 161st Street/River Avenue subway station, the station right at Yankee Stadium. I know because I was riding the D train at the time, and the were stopping all trains at 145th Street in Manhattan and making everyone get out. One announcement said 161st Street was closed for a "police investigation," and another reported the reasons as "a severe customer injury." Most of the thousands of riders stranded at 145th street milled around wondering whether to go back downtown and cross over to another line, or just wait to see what would happen. A subway policeman, trying to clear the platform, passed through the crowd with a bullhorn. "Block tickets will be issued upstairs at the window," he was saying, but when someone asked him why, he saidnot into the bullhornthat some idiot had jumped the tracks.
