The immediate diagnosis on Fox Sports Midwest after the game was that he had an abdominal strain. Expect an MRI tomorrow. We'll keep you updated. Views: Isringhausen is the J.D. Drew of closers. He's had umpteen surgeries on his pitching shoulder, and the biggest surprise this offseason was that when he went under the knife, it was for his hip instead of one of his more typical arm injuries. Expect him to hit the disabled list, and consider grabbing Julian Tavarez if he's available. Tavarez would be the overwhelming favorite to be handed the job if Izzy is on the shelf for an extended period of time, but Ray King, Carmen Cali, or even semi-failed prospect Jimmy Journell could be given a shot at the role at some point. Randy Flores replaced Izzy in the ninth tonight, but Tavarez and King (most likely combo) had already pitched.

(The other pitcher who tied Isringhausen with 47 saves was the Marlins' own Armando Benitez.) This three-year extension replaces the final year Isringhausen had left on his contract. The contract, which runs through 2007, has an option for 2008 and is worth $25.75 million. Views: This is great news for Cardinals fans. He was a large part in bringing the Cardinals their first pennant in 17 years. He will continue to be a dominant force in the pitching staff for the Cardinals and the league itself.
Extractions: Height: 6'3" Weight: 210 Bats: Right Throws: Right Born: 9/7/72 Birthplace: Brighton, IL I have been a fan of Izzy's since he was first touted as the Mets star of the future. Though Jason has had some injury problems, and some freak accidents, he is looking great now. It was hard keeping up with Jason on the opposite coast, so never was I happier than when Izzy came to the A's! He became what the A's had been looking for since Dennis Eckersley...a dominating closer. Jason makes sure it's never dull when he's closing, and he fast became a fan favorite in Oakland! He was recognized this year as a 2000 AL All-Star and was on the mound when the A's clinched the AL West. Izzy ended the 2001 season by heling to lead the A's to the playoffs once again. He also cemented his role as one of baseballs best closers. In November of 2001, Izzy decided to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent to be closer to his home and family. Best of luck in St. Louis Izzy. I will miss you. See you in SF! Glory Days (From Izzy's page on Athlete Direct) In high school, Isringhausen starred in three sports at Southwestern High School, playing baseball, football and basketball. Izzy played three positions in high school, catcher, 3rd base and center field. He hit .340 as a senior, then played two seasons of center field at Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois.

Extractions: Oakland A's 2000...what will they be known for? The kids that showed they could not be bullied. They played the month of September, like it was the playoffs all month. They had the best record for the month in all of baseball. Tim Hudson won pitcher of the month honors (1.69 ERA, 5-0, .191 OPP AVG), and Jason Giambi won player of the month (.400 AVG, 13 HR, 32 RBI). Other stars of the month include Jason Isringhausen (1.74 ERA, 6 SV), rookie Barry Zito (1.74 ERA, 5-1, .177 OPP AVG), Jeremy Giambi (.368 AVG), and Terrence Long (.305 AVG, 23 RBI). The A's minor league teams continue rolling out stars. They had the MVP of the Pacific Coast League (AAA), in Jose Ortiz. Slick fielding speedster Eric Byrnes in the outfield as a September call up. Jason Hart, power hitting first baseman of Midland (AA) and the A's fourth straight minor league player of the year, and many others. The A's had players on All Star teams at all levels, and had many players named to minor league all stars teams in publications such as Baseball Weekly and Baseball America. They had three minor league teams in the playoffs (Sacramento, Modesto, and Visalia), proving that there minor league system is still stocked with talent. Even though the A's took the eventual World Champs to the brink, Billy and company were not done with this team. In January 2001, Billy went out and got one of the biggest names on the market, Johnny Damon. Damon came over from Kansas City, part of a three team deal that sent Ben Grieve to Tampa Bay, and AJ Hinch to Kansas City. This deal gave the A's a true leadoff hitter, and more speed. With Matt Stairs also leaving, the A's moved more to speed and defense in the outfield.

Baseball BASEBALL NOTEBOOK February 27, 2005 St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen , who tied for the National League lead with 47 saves last year, agreed to a three-year contract extension yesterday. ADVERTISEMENT Isringhausen, who played much of the season with a painful hip condition that required surgery in November, agreed to a three-year deal that replaces the final year of his current deal. The contract will run through the 2007 season with an option for 2008 and will be worth a guaranteed $25.75 million. Also, the Atlanta Braves closed in on an extension with pitcher Tim Hudson , who has one year left on his deal. Bonds steps in Slugger Barry Bonds took a few swings in the batting cage at the San Francisco Giants' training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., facing live pitching earlier than the club expected. Bonds, 40, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Jan. 31 . . . A diplomatic Jeff Kent , who once fought in the dugout with Bonds when they were teammates, said Bonds should be cut some slack as talk of steroids ripples through baseball. "Barry tries to do his best, as we all do, to shed light on issues that he has and we all have in our lives," Kent said from the Los Angeles Dodgers camp in Vero Beach, Fla. "I have a lot of respect for Barry. He is one of the best players ever to play the game. I know in time things will work themselves out." . . .
