Buildings on the four corners of 16th and Oregon were destroyed, and small crowds gathered in awe at the sight of the home of Frank Marcus, whose home was blown upside down. Numerous barns and homes were damaged on the south side. The fairgrounds on the corner of Jackson and Murdock streets were destroyed, and most businesses along the Fox River sustained major damage. First deaf man in baseball plays on Oshkosh team Hoy was born May 23, 1862, in Houcktown, Ohio. He became deaf due to illness as a toddler. Hoy graduated with highest honors and was valedictorian of his class in the School for the Deaf at Columbus, Ohio, in 1879. He married Anna Maria Lowrey in 1898. At 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and weighing 155 pounds, Hoy was a small man but earned respect for his speed and strong throwing arm. His career began in 1886 when he was chosen to play for the Oshkosh team of the Northwestern League by manager Billy Harrington. When Oshkosh lost its professional team in 1888, Hoy went on to play in the National League, the Players Strike League and the American Association ending his career in 1902 with Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Minor League.

You've got your Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. By and for the game's insiders. Its bosses and stat kings. Many of them as warm and fuzzy as automatons. Then you've got the Shrine of the Eternals, which among its 21 elected members includes a batch of feather-ruffling flakes, two heroes of the loathed players union movement, two women, a pitcher with one arm, outfielders who were deaf, mentally ill or banned for gambling - and a longtime member of the American Communist Party, a former sports editor of The Daily Worker. "Try to imagine a Communist in the writers' wing at Cooperstown," Shrine of the Eternals voter John Schulian wrote in an e-mail, referring to 2005 inductee Lester Rodney. "Hell, the great minds there probably wouldn't even let him pay to get in."
