Extractions: DETROIT Less than two years after hitting one of baseball's most dramatic homers, Aaron Boone can still enjoy helping his team win on a routine April night. Back from a one-year layoff caused by a knee injury, Boone hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Ugueth Urbina in the eighth inning Friday night, leading the Cleveland Indians over the Detroit Tigers "Being in here and shaking hands with the music playing is what it is all about," Boone said. "It's especially nice when you have a hand in the win." Boone is best known for his pennant-winning homer off Boston's Tim Wakefield in Game 7 of the 2003 AL Championship series, and he also homered for the Yankees in Game 3 of that year's World Series. But a knee injury sustained in a pickup basketball game caused him to miss 2004 and led the Yankees to release him. He signed with the Indians last June, but wasn't able to make his Cleveland debut until this week.

Extractions: H W B T : R Bobby Higginson biography on Baseball Almanac for complete statistics. By DEAN LOLLIS (Written in Spring 2002) LAKELAND, Fla. Baseball teams often have a player who typifies everything the franchise is about. For Detroit, many would point to Bobby Higginson as that player. One thing is for sure, he's a big part of Detroit's future. On April 1, 2001, he signed a contract that will keep him in the Tigers' outfield until 2005. His signing became even more important as the Tigers attempt to rebuild with the signings of Dimtri Young, Jeff Weaver and Steve Sparks. His 2001 season has been described as a disappointment. For many players, an effort of .277 with 17 home runs, 77 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 147 games would be numbers worth bragging about. He did, however, spend time on the disabled list from May 20 to June 5. While a healthy Higginson in 2002 will go a long way to returning to his 30 home run performance of 2000, other factors may also affect his statistics as well as those of his teammates.

Extractions: Robert Leigh Higginson (born August 18 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who has played his entire career for the Detroit Tigers . He has a career batting average of .272. He attended Temple University Higginson was drafted by the Tigers in the 12th round of the draft. His rookie year was when he played 130 games for the Tigers. Higginson has hit .300 in and , scored over 100 runs in and drove in over 100 runs in and 2000. His career high of 30 home-runs came also in 2000. He is considered one of the better fielding outfielders in baseball . Although he was paid 11,850,000 in and $8,850,000 in , he appears to be reaching the end of his career as it is apparent that his bat speed has slowed and he is no longer able to hit with the authority he did in 2000. Further, he will make $8,000,000 in 2005, and has contributed one RBI to the team. The real genius here is Higginson's agent, for getting the Tigers to agree to such a big contract. However, since we are dealing with a contract executed in the Randy Smith era, that might not be saying much. edit Bobby Higginson at ESPN.com

Extractions: Baseball Almanac "If you're wondering what's wrong with Fenway Park in the first place, you're not the only one. Fenway is special precisely because it has what modern stadiums lack: seats that, while often cramped, offer the best views in baseball; and the sense that, if you squint, that could be Smoky Joe Wood pitching to Ty Cobb out there instead of Jeff Fassero and Bobby Higginson." - Webmaster Neil deMause (sportsjones.com) B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an unprecedented collection of baseball related quotations spoken about the hollowed grounds in Boston, Massachusetts best known as Fenway Park. Fenway Park Quotations In Alphabetical Order Quotations About Fenway Park "As Commissioner, youre supposed to be objective. It wasnt much of a secret, though, that I loved Fenway especially how it made you a participant, not a spectator." - Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn "As I grew up, I knew that as a building (
Extractions: Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.
