Baseball Musings: July 2002 Archives And higginson scored 4 runs. It s an unusual night for them, as coming into National League manager bob Brenly, baseball executive vice president Sandy http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/2002_07.php
Extractions: Baseball Musings July 31, 2002 Even More on Floyd Deal: Rob Neyer points out this column by Michael Kay on why he thinks this deal might raise some eyebrows. Posted by StatsGuru at 11:48 PM Baseball Big Unit K's: With 15 K tonight, Randy Johnson is only 13 behind Seaver for 15th on the all-time K list. He's also now within 1900 of Ryan. He'll be 40 in September, but his K per 9 remains very high at 11.2. Given he keeps this up for the rest of the year. He'll be within 1700 of Ryan at the end of the season. So he'll need to average a little less than 300 K a year for 6 years to pass Ryan. Here's Ryan from the age of 40 on (seasonal age): That's a total of 1437 K. So even if Johnson matches the greatest pitching performance by anyone over 40, he'll still fall short. But let's say Johnson has two more 350 K seasons left in him. That would leave him about 1000 short of Ryan, and from age 42 on, Ryan had 939 K's. Ryan's record looked insurmountable when it was set. It still may be, but until Johnson actually slows down, I wouldn't bet against him reaching that mark. Posted by StatsGuru at 11:11 PM Baseball Perfect July: With his win today, Rodrigo Lopez probably should be pitcher of the month. He went 6-0 in July with a 2.57 ERA. All that despite allowing 7 HR, accounting for 9 of his 13 runs allowed (12 earned). With low strikeouts and a good number of HR allowed, I don't know if he's going to go far, but he's a bright spot in a season that turning out to be better than I would have expected.

Extractions: Logan's baserunning and unusual plays highlight Detroit's one-run victory By CRYSTAL EVOLA Of The Oakland Press ARLINGTON, Texas - Bizarre. Unconventional. Strange. Advertisement Take your pick of any adjective to describe how the Tigers scored their runs en route to a 6-5 win over the Rangers on Wednesday at Ameriquest Field. "It's not pretty, but it doesn't have to be pretty," manager Alan Trammell said. Nook Logan's speed helped the Tigers win their second straight series and finish their AL West Division road tour with a 4-2 record. They also improved to 5-10 in one-run games. Logan scored what proved to be the decisive run in the top of the ninth on Brandon Inge's sacrifice fly to shallow right field. Undoubtedly, scoring Logan and Omar Infante from first and second, respectively, on a wild pitch in the seventh ranked as the game's most unusual play. "Well, it was definitely strange," third base coach Juan Samuel said. "I'm not saying crazy. In this game, when we think we've seen everything, something happens."

Extractions: Game Play: Before we get started, I have to get this off my chest: I don't like baseball. I don't watch baseball. And I couldn't care less about baseball. On the other hand, I like this game! I've played a lot of really bad sports games for these reviews and this one of the best so far. It's not Fastbreak, whose twisted sense of humor appeals to me, but it is a heck of a lot better than RedZone or Top of the Order. In MLBS2000 (long name, huh?) you assemble a team made out of various Player cards, just as you would a real baseball team. Them, you and your opponents play a simulated game of baseball. The mechanics are lightning fast. The pitcher rolls a twenty-sided die and adds the number to his "Control" stat. If that is higher than the batter's "On Base" stat, the pitcher has the "Pitcher's Advantage," and if not, the batter has the "Batter's Advantage." Once the pitcher has determined this, the batter's player rolls the die and consults a chart. Which chart? Well, if the pitcher has the advantage, look at the chart on the pitcher card. If the batter has the advantage, look at the chart on his card. The charts list results such as Single, Double, Triple,Homer, Walk and Out. Each result has a number. If the batter rolls a 15, it may be a result of Out on the pitcher card, but a result of Single on the batter. It all depends on who has the Advantage. This mechanic takes approximately twelve seconds to master.

Extractions: January 4, 1999 This article takes a look at how the Detroit Tigers did in the 1998 season relative to pre-season expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1998 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews Projected Actual Runs for 723 722 Runs allowed 791 863 Run Margin -68 -141 Wins 73 67 Pythagorean wins 74 65 Placement 4th 5th Prior to last season, the Tigers lost Willie Blair, their best pitcher, to free agency and traded Travis Fryman. In return, they added a bunch of players like Bip Roberts, Joe Randa and Luis Gonzalez. Still, there were hopes for a division title prior to the start of the season. Roberts and Gonzalez could improve the offense; Scott Sanders could turn into the leader of the pitching staff; pigs could fly. We didn't think these hopes were realistic, but when they weren't realized, Buddy Bell paid for this optimism with his job. Bell probably helped grease the skids by encouraging the playoff talk, at least until reality (in the form of a 4-17 start) set in and the team started to looking for someone to blame.
