Extractions: Hockey.CP The first fire sale of the season may be in Kansas City. The Royals have been awful yet they have a lot of talent. They have one of the best players in baseball (Carlos Beltran) and a solid third baseman (Joe Randa). Those are the two names floating around now. You can add to that list a few obvious veterans: Juan Gonzales and Benito Santiago. It seems a bit early in the season to mention fire sales, but KC must realize by now that they are unlikely to catch either the Twins or White Sox. So youd have to figure if they get the right offer at this point, theyd start unloading. Posted by Christopher Wavrin at 03:36 PM So I've mostly been discussing the Twins in this blog. But as I live near Washington, DC, I shall increasingly discuss the prospects of getting a baseball team here. Both the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia seem to be the leading contenders to get the Expos. I haven't talked about this too much because Major League Baseball's impotence on this issue has left me too bitter to talk about. It's much like discussing an open-air park for the Twins in Minnesota so many disappointments over the years that I can't bear to talk about it. Well, for the Expos relocation, the prospects seem to be up. Consider this the first of many posts on baseball coming to D.C./No.Va.

Extractions: Hockey.CP Rick Helling in Limbo Rick Helling, the former 20-win starter, was hoping to get his career back on track with the Twins. He had a decent spring until he fractured his leg. Now, after a few starts in the minors, hes supposedly ready to join the big leagues. The problem for Helling is that the Twins dont have a spot for him. Early season call-up Seth Greisinger has taken the 5th-started job and has been solid. His stats may not look impressive, but his last few starts have; impressive enough for the Twins to keep Helling out, Greisinger in. But its not likely that Helling will last too much longer in the minors. The Twins are expected to make a decision in the next few days. Theres a very good chance a trade could be made. For the Twins, itd be better if Helling could make a few more starts in the system and wait-and-see how Greisinger does in his next few starts. The last thing the Twins want is to be forced to part with a quality pitcher.

Extractions: I finally got around to doing the study and I'd like to share the results here. Here's how I did it: I ranked every MLB player at every position and identified the 16 best. Another way to look at it is this: I asked myself "Which of these players would be the top 16 starters at their position?" Of course this is not scientific. For position players I used OPS, defensive ratings, and some common sense. I also relied somewhat on reputation for some of these guys, because as does happen in real life, the best players don't always get the starting jobs. However, in a few instances, a player who currently is stuck in a backup role, vaulted to a starting position. For pitchers I relied heavily on ERA and WHIP. It was fairly easy to arrive at the best 16 closers, for example. It was surprisingly easy to identify the best 10-14 players at most positions - those players who would be starters in our "throwback league." But it became more difficult to slot players into the 15th and 16th slots. So, I'm sure there will be much debate over who made the throwback league and who didn't. I used the rules in place from 1901-1960 - no designated hitter. Which meant that I had to use some judgment as to where some DH's may play in the field, but that wasn't too difficult.

Extractions: Major League Baseball Graphs The Dirty Details Baseball Graphs Home 2003 Win Shares This is a list of all National League pitchers, ranked by Earned Runs Saved Above Average (ERSAA). ERSAA is a measure of how many runs the pitcher saved, given the number of innings he pitched, relative to the league. It's computed this way: League ERA minus pitcher ERA times innings pitched divided by nine, plus an adjustment for the home park. Lee Sinins uses the same statistic in his weekly stats report, only I believe he computes total runs saved, not just earned runs saved. I've supplied other rate stats, to give a bit more insight. In particular, I've included each pitcher's ERA and Innings pitched, as well as his FIP and associated DER. These are the exact same stats I use in the graphs, and they are defined in detail on the Details page . These two stats, by the way, seem to have about an equal impact on ERA, and they account for about 80% of ERA differences between pitchers. The rate stats are not adjusted for home park. The underlying source for this data is Doug . The home park adjustment comes from Patriot These stats are sortable. Click on the top of the column to sort by that item.

Here is a look at some of the pros that began their careers in the region: Baseball Roger Maris, who was raised in Fargo and attended Shanley High School, hit 275 career home runs, including 61 in 1961 to break Babe Ruth's longtime record. Maris' record was surpassed last year. Forum file photo Roger Maris: Last year's home run chase brought new national attention to this longtime local hero. The man who broke the record books with 61 home runs during the 1961 season with the New York Yankees nurtured his athletic career at Fargo Shanley High School, where he split his effort between baseball and football. Maris, born in Hibbing, Minn., but raised in Fargo, was a multi-sport standout at Shanley, catching the attention of the University of Oklahoma, which offered him a football scholarship. Maris accepted but lasted only two weeks away from home. Later that summer, he signed with the Cleveland Indians, beginning an ordinary pro baseball career marked by some extraordinary seasons.
