PaulKatcher.com: The Luckiest Fantasy Sports Seasons Ever When I hear the name of former Blue Jays third baseman kelly gruber (stats), friend Ed rode gruber s back to top of our fantasy baseball league s heap. http://www.paulkatcher.com/archives/000390.shtml
Extractions: When I hear the name of former Blue Jays third baseman Kelly Gruber ( stats ), I have the same reaction as when I smell Southern Comfort. I think back to 1990 and get sick to my stomach. In was in that year that I was a college freshman who thought it would be a pretty good idea to drink half a liter of liquor before a Halloween party. And it was in that year that my longtime friend Ed rode Gruber's back to top of our fantasy baseball league's heap. I don't know what kind of deal those two signed with the devil, but it sure wasn't a multi-year pact. That season, Gruber hit 31 homers and knocked in 118 runs. His best totals prior were 18 and 81. His best totals after were 20 and 65. Argh, I can't even think about it. To have Kelly Gruber on your team in 1990 was like buying a lemon from Larry Dallas and finding a million dollars in the trunk.

HickokSports.com - History - Baseball - Hitting For The Cycle One of baseball s rarest accomplishments to hit for the cycle with a kelly gruber, Toronto AL, 0416-1989. Vladimir Guerrero, Montreal NL, 09-14-2003 http://www.hickoksports.com/history/cyclehitting.shtml
Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents There's a sort of myth that hitting for a cycle - a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game - is an unusually rare accomplishment, far rarer than a no-hitter. Actually, the two feats have just about the same rate of occurrence. There have been 229 no-hitters in the two existing major leagues, and players have hit for the cycle 237 times. (Players also hit for the cycle 18 times in the American Association, when that was a major league. I haven't been able to find a list of those players, however.) Two players did it three times in their career: Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees, and Babe Herman, who twice hit for the cycle with the Brooklyn Dodgers and did it a third time with the Chicago Cubs. Herman's two cycle performances for the Dodgers came in the same year, 1931. He's the only player to have done it twice in a single season in one of the modern major leagues. However, two other players did it for American Association teams: John Reilly, with Cincinnati in 1883, and Tip O'Neill, with St. Louis in 1887. One of baseball's rarest accomplishments to hit for the cycle with a grand slam home run. That's been done only six times in major league history, by the following players:

Here's a transcript of this afternoon's chat. Sorry Kelly did not have time for all your questions, but he promises to return in the near future. Anonymous When you think in terms of your career where you felt you enjoyed yourself the most and why? Kelly Gruber: Definitely Toronto. It's a whole different atmosphere. The people are different, the culture's different. In the past I've compared it to the climate in Texas. The people are warmer and the atmosphere is more like down here in Texas and the phrase Southern Hospitality comes to mind. I've played in New York and it's a more reserved, colder climate - not just physically. I spent the majority of my time there and had the best years of my career in Toronto. M. Ryan

Eye - NEWS: Blue Jays Bow To Baseball's Cuban Embargo - 03.04.93 The 1993 baseball season is only a few weeks away, our triumphant Toronto deuce a seat and still the Jays have no third baseman to replace kelly gruber, http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_03.04.93/NEWS/cit0304.htm
Extractions: PAUL PALANGO The 1993 baseball season is only a few weeks away, our triumphant Toronto Blue Jays are in spring training, regular season ticket prices have jumped a deuce a seat and still the Jays have no third baseman to replace Kelly Gruber, who occasionally manned the spot between injuries and who now dwells in the bad books of fans of the California Angels. What about Omar Linares? Over the winter there was one of those curious stories about various teams, including the Jays, coveting Linares, a Cuban national reputed to be the best baseball player in the universe. There is no guarantee that Cuba would allow Linares to leave the country, but should he be allowed to do so, it is believed that Linares has the potential in his first major league season to hit 30 home runs, steal 50 bases and win a Gold Glove for fielding. But Linares can't play in the the major leagues because of an embargo by the United States government against Cuba. The Blue Jays tried to get an exemption to the ban so that Linares could play only home games at SkyDome but the plan was vetoed by baseball's powers because it was deemed that the Blue Jays would have an unfair advantage.
