Extractions: Once again, the Atlanta Braves reclaimed their title as National League champions and were anxious to make amends for their devastating Game 7 loss to the Minnesota Twins in the previous Series. The Nationals were almost put out of the running, but recaptured the pennant with a three run, ninth-inning rally against the Pittsburgh Pirates to advance to the finals. The Toronto Blue Jays represented the first Canadian franchise ever to appear in a Fall Classic (after beating the Oakland A's in the American League playoffs) and held a benefit that had been an "Achilles heel" for the Braves in the '91 affair, an indoor stadium. Atlanta had been winless against the Twins at the Metrodome and the Jays' Skydome offered the same opportunity for home field advantage. Game 1 belonged to Atlanta's Tom Glavine, (who tossed a four hitter) with Damon Berryhill coming up huge with a clutch, three run homer for the 3-1 opening victory. Toronto evened the score the following day with a 5-4 comeback of their own thanks to utility man Ed Sprague's pinch, two run homer off baseball's all-time saves leader, Jeff Reardon in the ninth.

Batavia Baseball History 1939 To Present When baseball returned to Batavia in 1957, the league and the team both had new Future major league allstars, kelly gruber and Jeff Shaw did play in http://www.muckdogs.com/frame_pages/history2.htm
Extractions: In 2005, the Muckdogs will be entering their eighth season as the nickname for the Batavia franchise. Throughout the years, Batavia has called its New York-Penn League team by many different names. It all began in 1939, in the PONY (Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York) League. The Clippers, as they were then called, finished their inaugural season with a mediocre 48-54 record finishing fourth in the six team league. The team was called the Clippers until 1953. After 1953, the Batavia franchise ceased operation until the 1957 season. During this first stint in the league, Batavia won two league titles. When baseball returned to Batavia in 1957, the league and the team both had new names. The league was now called the New York-Penn League (adopted in 1956) and the team was called the Indians (affiliated with the Cleveland Indians). The Indians would last for three seasons, with subpar results (172-195 record), before stopping operations again for the 1960 season. In 1961, baseball returned to Batavia for the second time in five years. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the new affiliate and the team adopted their name. The 1961 season also saw the first winning season in Batavia since 1949. The Pirates played in Batavia for five seasons and won the New York-Penn League title in 1963, Batavia's last championship team. During the Pirates tenure, future major leaguers Dock Ellis and Steve Blass both pitched in Batavia.

Extractions: In the 1930's and 40's baseball was king. Every town had its baseball team, amateur or semipro, with organized leagues in cities and the surrounding countryside. Barnstorming baseball teams, most often black, traveled from town to town taking on the hometown teams. Some of the better local players played on more than one team during the season. In Batavia, the Batavia Bees and Polish Falcons fielded competitive teams. Several hundred spectators would attend games depending on the opposition. Games against LeRoy town teams, Wellsville Sinclairs and especially traveling teams like the Ethiopian Clowns would draw very well. A Bees game played against the New York Colored Giants drew nearly 1000 fans. Bees won 12 to 8. Younger boys played in an intramural league, YMCA league, and formed neighborhood teams. Professional baseball developed minor leagues throughout the country developing and feeding players to the major leagues. The Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals were leaders in minor league farm systems. In 1938 the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals were looking at Western New York for the possible creation of a Class D league. The country was coming out of the depression and World War II was still in the future. It was because of this environment that the idea of a professional league would be met with enthusiasm. It was a matter of community pride. A meeting of baseball representatives was held in Olean, New York at the Olean House November 27, 1938, "for exploratory purposes only" to see if there was enough interest in Western New York, Pennsylvania and the province of Ontario to form a professional league.

The Baseball Guru - 1990, Japan Prevails By John B. Holway baseballGuru.com Home Page baseball Analysis John Holway / the japanese insider kelly gruber .274 31. Mike Sciosia .264 11. Shawan Dunston .262 17 http://baseballguru.com/jholway/analysisjholway37.html
Extractions: John Holway the japanese insider 1990, Japan Prevails By John B. Holway In the long history of U.S.-Japan series, the Japanese have won two series, 1970 and 1990. In 1970 they beat the San Francisco Giants six games to three. In 1990 they bested an American All-Star team four games to three with one tie. That 1990 U.S. team included: BA HR Lenny Dykstra Barry Bonds Ken Griffey Jr Julio Franco Roberto Alomar Cecil Fielder Kelly Gruber Mike Sciosia Shawan Dunston Glenn Davis Jesse Barfield Dave Stewart Ramon Martinez Dave Stieb Chuck Finley Randy Johnson Oil Can Boyd Bobby Thigpen 57 saves Rob Dibble 31 saves Jeff Montgomery 24 saves The Japanese strategy was to send each pitcher to the mound for only two or three innings, thus the Americans would be constantly facing a new hurler almost every time they came to bat. The Americans may have been suffering from jet lag as they dropped the first four games. Game 1 The sleepy visitors got only two hits in the Tokyo Dome as the Japanese beat Boyd 2-1. Game 2 Japan tied it in the third on a walk and three singles and went into the ninth with a 4-3 lead.

Extractions: The baseball name Cooper was sold to another company and in 1996 pro bat production stopped as the plant manager, Ross Huehn and the pro department focused on major growth in sales of the other product being manufactured there, professional hockey sticks. When the Pro Shop closed in 1996, it left behind the right mixture of available equipment, over 30 years of direct experience in professional bat making, and the expressive interest of all lead manufacturing staff. Something was just waiting to be done..... In the spring of 1999 Ross Huehn established the new brand name, what will be the 3rd generation label in Canadian bat manufacturing, from St Marys to Cooper to KR3. The entire Cooper Pro Shop was purchased, lead staff moved over and new equipment brought in to bring together old experience with up to date technology. KR3 is a company that has vast experience in grading and purchasing high quality wood, turning and finishing bats using ancient hardening-processes, and in ultimately making products that out perform at the highest professional level. Remember the name KR3, superior quality in baseball.

1990 AL Stargell Award Rickey is the greatest base stealer in baseball history; he does much, much more, kelly gruber was a solid, consistent player who had one big season. http://venus.lunarpages.com/~double2/History/400Pages/al1990.html
Extractions: for Most Valuable Player C ecil Fielder, unable to get regular playing time with the Blue Jays after spending four years with them, spent the entire 1989 season in Japan. He came back with Detroit in 1990, and hit 51 home runs, the first American League player to reach 50 since Maris and Mantle in 1961. He didn't win the MVP; Rickey Henderson did. Fielder had a large numbers of supporters, though, enough to make it a close vote (Fielder himself was also quite perturbed at losing). Who deserved the award? Their best player was star left-fielder Rickey Henderson, who had his best season and won the MVP Award. Rickey was also the team's best player in the playoffs, but the rest of the team around him fell apart against the Reds in the World Series. Henderson was 31 years old, midway through his great career. Though Rickey won't have much problem getting into the Hall Of Fame, I think he is another example of a player whose reputation has suffered because fans identify him with only a single skill. Rickey is the greatest base stealer in baseball history; he does much, much more, but gets little credit beyond what he does on the basepaths. On the other hand, players who do well in one of the Triple Crown categories tend to be overrated, like Fielder.
