Extractions: Baseball Fever American League Tampa Bay Devil Rays PDA View Full Version : Grieve going? The Commissioner 02-15-2003, 08:42 AM How long do you think Ben Grieve is going to stay with the Devil Rays? More importantly, how long if he puts up an attitude is it going to be before Piniella gives him the boot? The Commissioner 06-19-2003, 05:55 PM I'm actually very surprised to see that Grieve and his $5.5 million salary is still with the ballclub. I would have thought that he would have done something to irritate Piniella by now. I still think they could make better use of his salary. He is batting .250 this season with 4 home runs. 06-27-2003, 11:54 PM With the most recent tiff with Sweet Lou, you can see that he might not be here next year. I went to my 1st Devil Rays game with my kids, we had fun but there were only 17,000 or so people there. I was impressed with Damian Rolls who seemed to do well against the Yanks in this most recent series. The Commissioner 06-28-2003, 01:07 AM It looks like I may have been on the mark with my Grieve prediction after all. Why is it that I saw this one coming before Piniella did?

They acquired Ben Grieve from the Brewers for a player to be named later and cash. Grieve, 28, once was one of the most promising young outfielders in the game before his career took a downturn after the Athletics sent him to the Devil Rays in the Johnny Damon trade of January 2001. After three disappointing years in Tampa Bay, Grieve signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Brewers as a free agent. He hit .261/.364/.415 with seven homers and 29 RBIs in 108 games for Milwaukee. His power and bat speed aren't what they once were, and because he offers little as a baserunner and defender, he really shouldn't be used as a regular. He has career totals of .269/.367/.442 with 117 homers and 485 RBIs in 938 games. The Cubs also added catching depth for September on Tuesday by picking up Mike DiFelice from the Tigers for a player to be named later.

Extractions: By BILL MADDEN Lance Berkman will anchor the Astros offense when he returns from knee injury. (Illustration by Ed Murawinski) The great divide between the haves and have-nots in the National League's most competitive division appears to have been significantly narrowed, although not exactly by design. The three Central powers, the Cardinals, Astros and Cubs, all took significant hits in the winter free agent market, while the previously tightfisted Reds and Brewers, shocked their fans by increasing payroll for the first time in three years. The result: A likely free-for-all with only the payroll-strapped Pirates unable to view themselves as legitimate playoff contenders at the start of the season. Tony La Russa's defending National League champion Cardinals lost the heart of their "up-the-middle" with shortstop Edgar Renteria defecting to the Red Sox, veteran catcher Mike Matheny to the Giants and second baseman Tony Womack to the Yankees. But La Russa is confident that 22-year-old Yadier Molina, the youngest in a major league family of catchers, can handle the receiving chores and, in fact, prove to be a better all-around player than Matheny. La Russa concedes that David Eckstein can't measure up to Renteria's hitting prowess and range at shortstop, but is satisfied he'll be adequate while also adding some needed speed to the top of the order. In Mark Grudzielanek, La Russa should get better defense at second and more pop offensively.

That means he's older than me after all, yet still younger than my roommate, Scott. I'm a month away from entering my supposed baseball prime. Scott...I probably shouldn't say, though he did celebrate a certain milestone a few months ago. The two of us make a surprisingly good metric for a team's relative age.
